But isn't blue the New York state color? Even Nassau county Police cars and MTA Long Island bus CNGs (and now NICE) sport some kind of blue in their schemes. As for the regular MTA buses, I just don't see them using anything else besides blue white and black. It be like WMATA using colors for their buses that are not red, white, and blue. |

But if you want the blue to stand out, then it should be more than a stripe. While I'm not a big fan of the SBS paint jobs, they represent more of what I wish the regular buses look like.Also, not every bus has to look exactly alike. Some can have more blue than others. I think it comes down to the expense of the paint though. |

The black and yellow, IINM, is for greater visibility at grade crossings.While both roads have grade crossings, The LIRR has many more, and many of those are particularly busy. The closest grade crossing to Grand Central Terminal is Virginia Road, just north of the North White Plains yard on the Harlem line. There are 7 other crossings on the Harlem line within 50 miles of Grand Central Terminal. On the Hudson line, the closest grade crossing to Grand Central Terminal is Hudson Avenue, just north of the Peekskill station, which is outside of Metro-North's electric territory. The only other crossing on that line within 50 miles is the lightly used Manitou Station Road crossing. In contrast, LIRR's grade crossings are numerous, and sometimes closely spaced. There are 44 crossings between Long Island City and the approximate milepost of the Virginia Road crossing, 77 between LIC and the approximate point of the Hudson Avenue crossing, and 84 in electric territory within 50 miles. In that same 50-mile distance on Metro-North's New York electric territory, there are a total of 8 crossings, less than one-tenth of the LIRR's count. Trains on the LIRR can, and do, cross most of these crossings between 60 and 80 miles per hour (e.g. a Ronkonkoma train running at speed through the New Hyde Park station). Therefore, to increase visibility of their trains, their front ends are colored black and yellow. |
