I know it was scheduled to be cut, and then reinstated.Missing just one summer would cause a big ridership hit once it starts up again. |

About 1973, MSBA inherited the Hicksville - Jones Beach summer route from some private company, I don't know which. At the time, there were perhaps four routes to Jones Beach, including, I believe one from 165th Street terminal.--- The present N87 map shows it using Newbridge Road south to North Jerusalem Road, east to Wantagh Avenue (near MacArthur HS), then south on Wantagh Avenue west on Merrick Road, curve up onto the southbound Wantagh Parkway. I am uncertain whether that was the "old" route. --- In my view, the youngsters riding this to the beach are not juvenile delinquents. They are kids getting used to public transit, instead of relying on Mom or Dad for car transportation. They could also bicycle to the beach, but I learned that the slight upgrade to Hicksville (139 foot elevation) is a challenge. Southbound rides are easy. Also, some beach employees depend on the bus. They are workers in society. |

As you stated this was an inherited route from a private operator. Most Jones Beach service was either Bee Line/Stagecoach (Freeport and Wantagh shuttles) or Schenck that served many Queens and Nassau locations.Steinway Transit and New York Bus Service were also in the the action. I believe the Hicksville line was an extension of the Wantagh shuttle, so I would guess Stagecoach operated the route. As you described the route, the routing is the same. I've had the pleasure of riding the line many times. The passengers during the week are primary teenagers whose parents are probably working so they can't drive them (or they don't want to be seen with mommy or daddy). The teens go wild from boarding the bus to exiting. I don't know how the drivers can stand it. |

I believe Mid-Island Transit operated the JB route from Hicksville, as well as other locations such as Farmingdale & Bethpage. I can attest to the wildness of the teens on the JB bus,as I worked it. I once squeezed about 118 of them on one trip out of the beach. Couldn't hear myself think. |

I am much surprised to see this item for $50 on ebay:---- It shows six trips daily from the Central Bus Terminal, Flushing, fare fifty cents weekdays, seventy-five cents weekends. Issued May 1937. Operator: North Shore. |

Thursday, June 27, 2013, was overcast, so only a hundred or so cars were in the nearest parking lot and bus patronage was low. Below, the bus stop at the Central Mall wisely warns passengers about the need for a fistful of change or a Metrocard.About 5:35, a bus to Freeport had six passengers. I've only had a 3G on the n87 and it had them on. I'm wondering if NICE put the announcements on the 1700s and 1800s.I have full on-board rides of the N87 in both directions: To Jones Beach: To Hicksville: |

They also ran a route from Walt Whitman Shopping Center. Jerusalem Avenue ran a route on today's N51 and a route from Massapequa Park. (They used to run the Massapequa loop.) |

They couldn't run anything from Hempstead because other companies had the routes. JB routes were just extensions of regular routes. |
