My friend, who is transit operator, was fascinated this was parked in the middle of nowhere". Kind like in rural areas, school bus drivers take their buses home.

That is one of the most confusing transit agency websites I've ever seen.

Agreed. Not only that, quite a few of their services run only once a month or twice a month! There's one route that runs only on the second Tuesday of every month with 5 trips, and there was one I saw that runs every other Friday, two trips. I have never heard of that for any fixed route transit system...

In a rural area, that s understandable. Dutchess County used to have a lot of those services prior to major cutbacks.

Morris County was able to obtain government funding for "rural transportation services" that ran once or twice a week years ago. I don't believe that's the case anymore.

ATA is a bit of a hybrid agency, in that most of their services are dial-a-ride or flex route with fixed routes typically using smaller buses. This particular service is a commuter run between Clearfield County and Penn State.

FWIW, that bus could very well be one of the old FREX buses which ran between Colorado Springs and Denver until that service lost funding a couple years ago. A few Pennsylvania systems bought ex-FREX buses (it may have been part of a PennDOT contract, but I'm not sure): Rabbit Transit in York, Lebanon Transit and New Castle Area Transit are the systems that I believe bought those buses (I'm definitely sure about Rabbit Transit).

I remember when Dutchess County had LOOP 6 which was Saturday-only... But I had never seen once-a-month service... I understand that ATA is a hybrid agency, but twice a month service??? Rural or not, twice a month isn't very convenient, if you ask me.

I've heard of this before for rural dial a ride routes with cutaways or small buses, but never a full sized transit bus.

Services such as that are more targeted for seniors who take discretionary trips (ie. shopping). Not every transit service has to operate seven days a week to serve needs of a particular market.

I've seen many rural routes that only run one or two days a week, or even every two weeks. But I don't think I've seen monthly, especially not fixed route!

I can confirm Lebanon TRansit has at least one of the ex-FREX bus, got a picture of it when I visited Lebanon Transit with the Museum of Bus Transportation's annual meeting a couple of years ago.

The LOOP 6 was more of a supplement that allowed for a one-side ride to the malls which was inter-Poughkeepsie. Back in the 90s, LOOP ran a once-weekly Saturday round trip from Amenia (from then-Ames Plaza on 22/44) solely marketed towards those headed for the malls.

The demand just isn't there for more frequent service, nor is the money to operate it. City residents are used to being able to just go out the door and expect to catch a bus or train right away, but rural and even suburban lifestyles are very different. Many elderly or other dependent folks know that they will have to wait for a family member or friend to take them out to do their shopping and errands at the other person's convenience, so the concept of a bus route that runs only a few times a month isn't really much different.

The flip side to these rural operations is that the passengers are likely getting a much more personal riding experience. If the ATA driver is a regular then he or she probably knows their regulars and pays attention to them. If the driver drops Mrs. Smith off at the Wal-Mart and she isn't waiting at the stop when the bus comes back, they may well wait for her or even go in to see if she's coming. Any regular TA bus is just going to leave without you.
