I just received notice in the mail that I have to take the BOSS test on 6/22/13.

What exactly is this BOSS test and what does it cover?

Do I need the CDL permit beforehand to take the BOSS?

I never received a list number before so all this is out of the blue.

The BOSS (Bus Operator Selection Survey) is a personality test to see what kind of person you are when it comes to operating a transit bus; your interactions with the passengers, coworkers, and bosses; and your tardiness at the job. It contains 75 multiple-choice questions and you have 75 minutes to complete it. If you really want to be a bus operator, DO NOT mark down the truth answers! Mark down the "what they want to hear" answers. Some of the questions will be repeated 2-3 times, but in different wording, so your answers must be consistent.

No, you don't need a CDL at the time you'll take the BOSS. If you receive a "congratulations" letter after taking the BOSS, start obtaining a CDL permit right away. Check out Red Hook on the Road first to see if you fully qualify for their program (you'll save a lot of money). If not, then you'll either have to go to the nearest DMV office to pick up a CDL manual or click here for the online CDL manual and study sections 2, 4, and 5.

Your list number should be in the letter that you received. If it isn't there, give the MTA Employment Center a call at (347) 643-8229. You'll have to give them the applied exam number and your SS number in order for them to tell you your random list number.

BTW, for my curiousity, are you taking the BOSS for exam 2301 (bus operator for MTA Bus), 2613 (bus operator for NYC Transit), or 8094 (conductor for NYC Transit, but decided to become a bus operator for NYC Transit)?

Do not forget to check P and S during your CDL test so you will be qualify to drive a school bus as well beside passengers bus in case they do not hire you.
