Bx13 Extension: great move.

Posted by r17-6599 on Sun Jan 6 17:16:52 2013

Hope it works out. Personally I felt it was a schlep from/ to the shopping mall and the 161 street transit lines, especially carrying stuff.
Njoy.

I remember when the Bx-13 was the Castle Hill Avenue bus and ran
between Castle Hill Park and Pelham Parkway / White Plains Road. I believe that during the midnight hours the buses only ran as far as Westchester Avenue. It was a good route with regular service.

Great pics of a great extension to a line that made the most sense to extend to that great mall.

However, did they not have any better ideas as to what to program the destination signs? RIVER AVE-149TH ST? How original...

Glad U like the shots, CE. This should be a good move for the TA and riders alike. Too many private cabs in the bus stops today, however.
They need to paint the pavement yellow as well. Maybe that would help.

I'm sure they'll get to it (repainting the pavement); 161 Street is too busy a street to be left alone for too long.

Private cabs (and other vehicles) also impede the Bx12 +SBS in Fordham Ctr and the M34/A +SBS at times...

This move should have happened sooner - it's only another 5-7 minutes away, but I'd like to see the Bx13 eventually extended to Lincoln Hospital and The Hub on weekdays from 6 AM to 8 PM (middays on alternating trips), also serving the Bronx main post office and Hostos Community College. The last stop eastbound would be East 149 Street and 3 Avenue both ways...relay would be: left at Bergen Avenue, Westchester Avenue, Brook Avenue (layover) and back on East 149 Street.

How about Bx13 GATEWAY PLAZA or Bx13 BX TERM MKT or Bx13 BRONX TERMINAL MARKET?

Just my two cents...

I suppose 'cause the Bx Term Mkt isn't there anymore, that shouldn't be used. And 'cause the buses run passed the Gateway but not terminating there, it is not correct. I think 149th is ok. I guess it is not the "HUB" section. Not sure what to call that area.

I'd like to see the Bx19 xtend to Bot Gdns Station. With the renovation of the parking lot, etc, buses can make a loop into there.

Even though the Bx Terminal Market the actual market isn't there anymore, its interesting how they market Gateway Plaxa as Bronx Terminal Market on the signs there...

And even though it terminates at 149th Street, you can argue that it is in fact the southernmost border of the property which would make it quite accurate. Hmmm....

Even though the bus terminates at 149th Street, I can't argue that it is in fact the southernmost border of the property in question. But like the Bx9's that cut back to 225th Street; should they then read "225th St-Target" because the bus borders that property?

I'm more of a fan of this type of sign reading. I think it's most important to easily identify the intersection of where the bus will terminate. Having a landmark/place of interest included is helpful, but I'm not sure it's needed in this case.

It reminds me of my childhood days when the sign reading for the S/B Bx37 (before it became Bx13) was "Bx37 Yankee Stadium" in somewhat condensed lettering while most read "Bx37 Yankee Stad". My issue with this is that it assumes the passenger know where Yankee Stadium is located.

Hmm, good point. I feel that's a different scenario, since Target isn't the main reason that Bx9 buses short turn there, whereas the Bx13's terminus is pretty much at the doorstep of the mall, much like the Bx12's Terminus is at (inside) Bay Plaza or the Q8's terminus is at the Gateway Plaza. One could argue that the S79's terminus is at the back of the SI Mall, Marsh Avenue, and not the mall itself.

I see where you're coming from, but if that's the case, then why would it be okay for Bx29 buses to display BX29 CITY ISLAND (not noting where on City Island it terminates) or for M15 buses to display M15 SOUTH FERRY (although the bus terminates near the Whitehall Street Ferry Terminal, no place around there is actually called SOUTH FERRY)? Why would those examples be exceptions?

If I see a sign that lists the intersection as a terminus like the Bx13 does, I would wonder "Gee, what's so important about that intersection that all of the buses have to terminate THERE?" Maybe if it cycled to Bx13 BX TERM MARKET/Bx13 RIVER AVE-149 ST, it wouldn't be so bad, much like the old B61 S/B reading: B61 IKEA TERMINAL/B61 BEARD-OTSEGO STS. It gives the intersection and the landmark. The landmark would probably lead to the intersection where the bus terminates, rather than potential passengers having to know beforehand.

Bx9 buses coming from Riverdale that terminate at 225 and Broadway normally do not make the left onto 225 Street, instead ending at the Bx7 stop.

Yes, but like the "BX28 Fordham Center". This bus doesn't touch Fordham, much less the "center". Just pointing people in the general direction, presumably.
You could argue that and have "BX13 149st/Bx House of Detention"; BX28 Freedomland" using names of destinations/ real estate markers no longer around like the Term. Mkt implies or "BX16 Ropes/ IHOP"; "BX1 138st Western Beef" (LMAO). I yank your chain, of course.

I know all about it, but "stretching" it to include Target, being at the doorstep. Or one might argue, "Marble Hill MNRR" or "Applebees" which are closer.
