Megabus Selling Connections?

A search of Durham NC to New York NY yields what appears to be two separate buses with a transfer in Washington DC. It looks as if Megabus is beginning to sell connections to determine if direct buses are warranted.

Is it a true connection, where they would hold the second bus if the first one is late? Or would you be SOL if you missed your connection?

SOL. No holds because they are different divisions.

Megabus goes to North Carolina? Never knew that!

I didn't see one on I - 95 when I was down there last month, where's those buses are a common sight North of DC on 95.

A seat 2 ride for only a dollar isn't a bad deal, Especially if both buses are non stop, NC is like four hours from DC so doing it non stop from shouldn't too taxing on the B/O.

They schedule a two and a half hour layover (even though there are several buses on the second leg in the meantime). So a missed connection is very unlikely.

Also, the fare is *more expensive* than booking them separately. On the day I searched, Durham to New York is $72. Separately, Durham to DC is $37, and DC to New York is $14, for a total of $51.

If they didn't refuse to sell tickets to walk-up passengers without a reservation except in New York (the last I heard), my strategy would be to reserve the first leg, and just ride the next bus out on a walk-up basis for the second leg.

Is there any point to running a separate route to Raleigh, or is Raleigh much more commercial than Durham?

The flight volume indicates that both Raleigh/Durham and Charlotte could support more service to NYC.

Look at it this way - Raleigh is more business and industrial, while Durham is more collegiate and regional.

And yes, they could use more service to NY, but remember this: the sweet spot for bus service is distances within a 5 hour range. Would a more general base be willing to do the 9 hour trip?

It's unlikely, however they probably will not hold buses for connections - makes things very complicated on their end.

At today's fuel prices? Yes. The dominant mode in this time range continues to be the car. Fuel alone to Durham is probably around $100 each way. Tolls are at least $20 each way.

That's why I'd rather do Greyhound long distance. Even if the buses aren't held, tickets are accepted on the next bus (or the previous one if it hasn't left yet) free of charge in most cases.

And the DIY drive to Durham from NYC is more like 14 hours when you factor in rest stops. Did the drive with my ex a couple of times. Not fun.

Wow, time of your rest stops overall take four hours?

In my experiences rest stops add a half a hour to 45 minutes to the trip time at most.

The drive is reasonable if you have two drivers, its tedious for one person make that drive though.

If its one person best to time it where you end up between DC and Richmond around 9 - 10 PM, get some shut eye at a hotel and continue the rest of the trip to NC the next day.

DC is like the halfway point but I - 95 kinda bypasses DC lol, if one is not familar with DC its hard to find your way back to I - 95 from New York Ave?... you know, that road that takes you to DC from 95 South and when you get closer to the City Amtrak's Ivy City Yard is on the right hand side.

Out in the country, much easier to hop back on the highway.

Try driving from Long Island to Chattanooga without sleeping. And then get up, go to Lynchburg, then Nashville, and then drive back to Long Island...and then go right to work.

And what's Charlotte? I think with an overnight bus, that range gets extended. Most of the overnight runs I drove (Richmond, Montreal, Cleveland) were packed out. Van Hool DD outfitted with 180 degree reclining seats anybody?
