I have yet to hear or read a rational negative critique of the Nova low floors. As one who sees them and has ridden them, I count them as the best things that have heppened to NYCTA bus transit since the 870s were yanked away on false pretenses. The Novas are really cool looking. They are the quietest buses in NYC since the Brooklyn trolley busses were discontinued. (Quiet is good in loud NYC. Why are all the other buses so damn loud by comparison?) They have rear windows. What's the problem? Orion finally came up with a really good looking design with the new generation, and then they closeed shop! What a disappointment. The best builder left standing is Nova; the rest, by comparison, are ugly boxes on wheels. |

I do feel that the Novas can still be improved if they want to become a stronghold for the future of the NYC Transit bus fleet. I say to myself that if they were a little bit longer (maybe 42.5' instead of 40'), that could help with spacing and capacity, but as it is for all buses, both low-floor and high-floor, people just don't want to move to the back, so it's inevitable that the buses will appear to be cramped no matter what.I was never a fan of any of the newer Orions that came out since 2002 (Original Orion 7s and the NG HEVs), but the 3Gs (7000-series) grew on me and they've become my favorites as well. Sadly Orion did close shop, but things do happen for a reason. The New Flyer Xcelsiors (or any of the New Flyer fleet except for some of the D60HFs) I'm not a fan of. The Xcelsiors just seem extremely out of place in New York and in my eyes aren't that great of a bus model. This is just opinion-based, but in the end, the MTA will have the final say-so as to what bus model they will want to do a mass order of and hopefully they will make the right choice...for me, I hope they go with Novas. |

Main problem is the seating config, rear doors open inward, lack of a/c, little room on the rear seats, lack of standee space, can not handle large crowds; when the full bus.... the bus is slooooooooooooooooooow. |

I disagree, the allison novabuses are always a nice ride.The problem with the Novabuses is that they are small, they simply cannot fit a normal load of riders like the rest of the fleet, especially the Orion third gens. They move slower when there is a full load of people, especially leaving St George during the pm rush or riding across the Verrazono on a packed s53. The fact that they cannot fit too many people poses a problem when you have lines that run every 15-30 minutes but still keep a considerable crowd on each run. The result is that some people have to be passed up when they would not be had the bus been an Orion or New Flyer. The conversation seats is an awkward setup and the rear window area is an impromptu garbage disposal. Queens may be a little better off because the buses run with lower headways and there is a lot more turnover at stops. That being said the novas are an awesome ride on empty, overnight runs! |

There are some legitimate complaints with the novabuses. The Orion Third Gens are a solid fleet and it is terrible that the MTA cannot replace the orion Vs with third gens. Honestly, before the swaps were announced, I was hoping the MTA would bring back the NGs to castleton to replace the novas but more third gens are even better. |
