Lanza, Ignizio ask MTA to stop using flashing blue LEDs lights on S79 SBS

The blue flashing lights heralding the arrival of Select Bus Service are distracting to drivers and should be turned off.

That's the message State Sen. Andrew Lanza and Councilman Vincent Ignizio have for the MTA -- with safety concerns in mind, they've asked the agency to stop using the flashing blue lights on buses that are part of Select Bus Service.

In a letter written to the Metropolitan Transportation Authority CEO Joseph Lhota, the elected officials cite a city law that states only certain emergency vehicles are permitted to use flashing blue lights on their vehicles.

Not withstanding the legality of the issue, they also claim that motorists could become "desensitized" to flashing blue lights on buses, and then drivers might ignore an actual emergency vehicle when it needs to get through.

Using the lights on buses could "dilute" their effectiveness and create "apprehension and undue distraction to drivers," which in turn, could cause longer response times in an emergency, Lanza (R-Staten Island) and Ignizio (R-South Shore) state in their letter.

New York state law only allows blue flashing lights on vehicles that belong to certain volunteer firefighters, police, fire, ambulances, emergency ambulance service and county emergency medical service vehicles, they said.

They should ask the MTA to get those hybrids off the line and put the Orion 5s back. Just saying....

You might have had a valid point if this hadn't come up already back in 2008 with the Bx12 SBS...those flashing lights can be confusing especially at night. Perhaps they should be changed to green or purple.

I agree. The lights are in violation of the NYS VTL, are distracting and would further dilute the effectiveness of emergency flashers when a driver hits the "panic button".

Just another case of the MTA acting above the law.

Interesting. I wonder when the flashing blue light issue will end up becoming a lawsuit against the MTA if they don't change it.

Must the lights flash? Would it be as effective (and legal) if the blue lights didn't flash and just remained on?

I also thought those flashing blue lights were a bit much. I first thought this a couple of years ago when I was driving on Fordham Road and a 5700 series NFI D60HF on the Bx12SBS was behind me.

Years ago (1970's ?) the NYC Dept. of Sanitation had flashing blue lights on the rear of garbage collection trucks. Then no more. They should be removed from the buses.

I don't think by law NYCT should be using the flashing red lights on supervisors cars or sirens for that matter. NYS VTL sets red for emergency vehicles. Don't really think NYS and NYCT have the same idea of what an emergency is.

I remember those 3 yellow flashing lights on the DSNY trucks. I wouldn't have guessed that they bothered other motorists because because they were mounted high, and they used incandescent bulbs.

In addition to the 2 flashing blue lights near the roof (on the D60HF), they also had another blue light in the windshield. I recall it being more like a strobe light. It was noticeable to me because the sun had just set and the bus was behind my car in heavy, slow moving traffic on Fordham Rd approaching the Uinversity Heights Bridge.

I thought the whole point of the blue lights was to tell passengers to get a POP receipt before the bus arrived. But the S79 doesn't have off-board fare collection.

In New York State, blue lights are courtesy lights for volunteer fire fighters. State law says you only have to yield to vehicles with red flashing lights. Police cars are allowed to have a blue light, but they must also have red lights.

I think this law should be changed to be consistent with other states. Blue lights should be required on, and reserved for, emergency vehicles. A blue light really stands out, since nothing else is that color, while there's plenty of red from tail lights and traffic lights.

Agreed---the MTA should choose some other color, such as green for the SBS...or perhaps consider a Luminator multi-color sign for these buses for the front only.

I can't say what it's like on the Orion 7NG SBS buses. Keep in mind, my issue wasn't with the blue lights mounted next to the destination sign. The New Flyers that were on the Bx12SBS had a third flashing blue light behind the windshield. At night that rapidly flashing light wasn't much different from those of an emergency vehicle which is the light I found to be annoying.

The Bx12SBS now uses the Nova LFS-A which (IIRC) has just the two blue lights near the destination sign. I don't know for sure, but I suspect the others were referring to those blue lights.
