Mike Gianaris calls for increased Q103 service

GIANARIS PUSHES TO EXPAND BUS SERVICE: Following pronouncements that previously cut transportation services in Western Queens would not be restored, state Senator Michael Gianaris is calling on the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA) to expand Q103 bus line hours of operation. He sent a letter to MTA Chairman Joe Lhota requesting a review of the Q103 for possible expansion to night and weekend service.

The Q103 is currently only operational on weekdays, with service terminating shortly before 7 p.m. It travels between Astoria and Hunter’s Point in Long Island City, along which a burgeoning arts corridor in Western Queens has been established. The bus is already well-utilized and demand for increased service hours will only grow as this arts corridor further develops and the community prepares for construction of the Cornell-Technion Applied Sciences Campus on Roosevelt Island. The only bridge connecting to Roosevelt Island empties directly onto the Q103 route between Astoria and Long Island City.

“Western Queens has experienced a population and development boom, and it is important that mass transit keeps pace with that growth,” Gianaris said. “The emergence of our LIC arts community and the opening of the Cornell-Technion Campus on Roosevelt Island make an expanded Q103 service a necessity.”

In July, Gianaris also called on the MTA to include the W subway and the QM22 bus on its list of service restorations. Gianaris believes Queens is in need of more transportation options, particularly as previously cut services are not restored.

Mike do you understand what the Q 103 is....

Here are things you should suggest, Extending the Q 104 to Roosevelt Island west and continue onto Broadway to 74th - Broadway Station

Reroute the Q 102 to Columbus Circle with revisions utilizing 21 St, an alternative to the F train

And make revisions for the Q 103 to take up the slack of the former Q 102

And finally getting your fellow constiguents and fellow Nimby Astorians to extend the N train to LGA!!!

Another clueless pol with unfunded mandates.
What the hell is the difference to Queens if the W is now the Q ?

The W serves Downtown while the Q does not.

Oh so transfer. At least they get a Broadway Express out of it to 14th Street.

It would take 5 600' train sets to put it back, they don't exist, and aren't projected to even if they take the R179 option order of 80 cars (which is for Staten Island, or cascading 75' cars to SI).

But they have had a Downtown service for many years and to them it is not just to cut it because the Downtown service was well utilized.

When the W ran, did most Astoria/downtown people actually let an N go by to wait for a W ?

I stand corrected, people in astoria did pass N trains for W trains if they were going Downtown. I thought you asked me if people passed W trains for N trains.

He has a legitimate demand with the Q103, however, especially south of Queensbridge; an area with that much population should have weekend bus service. A workable plan might be to extend the Q18 or Q66 down to Long Island City and leave the Q103 as is. I preferably would extend the Q66, via this routing: Westbound to LIC: instead of continuing up Queens Plaza South to Queens Plaza, right on 23 Street, right on 44 Drive, left on 11 Street, right on 48 Avenue, left on Center Boulevard, left on 50 Avenue, and layover.

To Flushing: up 50 Avenue, left on Jackson, slight left onto 11 Street, right on 44 Drive, left on 23 Street, left on Queens Plaza North, and regular.

Maybe merge Q103 with Q19, so two useless routes can be useless together.

The Q19 is not useless, especially with the Flushing extension. Q19 ridership has grown exponentially since the days of Triboro.

That would make the Q66 too long and the line already has problems because of inconsistent and unreliable service that has been provided for years. If you want to change the Q66 you are better off finding a way to provide more consistent service.

The Q19 could use a slight extension on its western end, however...have it run from 31 Street via 27 Street and return to Astoria Boulevard, then down to 8 Street and then to the current Q18/Q102/Q103 terminuis at 27 Avenue and 2 Street...give the Astoria Houses access to Flushing.

The other plan I would work with involves combining the Q103 with the Q18...and a tweak in southern Long Island City to serve areas closer to the water.

If I am not mistaken, many decades ago (1950s), the 19 did begin at 8th St. It also ran westbound down Astoria Blvd. from 31st St.
