The Nova BUS TMC RTS-06 #8397 Hybrid Retrofit is an ongoing project as of late 1999 to retrofit a series hybrid propulsion system onto a Nova BUS TMC RTS-06 chassis owned by NYCT.

The project's goal is to demonstrate reduced emissions and improved fuel economy and to evaluate the feasibility of converting NYCT's fleet of 2,800 RTS buses to hybrid drive at the normal mid-life powertrain overhaul.

NYCT set aggressive emissions targets for the bus of 0.06 gpm of PM, 15.0 gpm of NOx, and a fuel economy objective of 4.3 mpg.

The series hybrid-electric drive system is designed and integrated by Allison Transmission, a division of General Motors.

It features a single high-powered AC induction motor and gear reduction coupled with a genset to maintain voltage in the traction batteries.

The bus is fitted with a CRT continuously regenerating particulate trap produced by Johnson Mathey Inc. (JMI).

The JMI trap technology is sensitive to fuel sulfur levels, and therefore requires the use of reduced sulfur diesel fuel(less than 50 ppm sulfur).

The bus began a six-month revenue service test in 1999 and was emission tested in April 1999. The project sponsors included DARPA, Electricore, and the New York Power Authority; the project cost was $1.25 million.

I am guessing this project was not successful,as most(but not all) 8000 series RTS' were repowered with diesels..

Thanks for the info. Wasn't this bus shown outside the Javits Center when it was converted to Allison Hybrid? Shame it didn't last long.

The 8000 [8001-8396] were delivered as diesels, 6V92TA's, some received the Series 50 conversions. 8397 was delivered as a Methanol bus & later converted to Diesel hybrid and finally converted to straight diesel before retirement.
8398 was a CNG - Diesel dual fuel bus, while 8399 was straight CNG's from day 1 and eventually were sold to Command along with 8567 and actually ran under the MTA banner as 4976. 4977& 4978 before being retired in 2006.

They weren't renumbered when they went to MTA Bus? We have 4900-series RTS' already, you can't have two buses use the same number unless one is retired.

Those three were re-numbered as 752, 753 & 754. 754 aka; 4978---8567 was the only one to actually run under the MTA banner.
