Thanks Oren. The 19 SILVER SPRING was definitely a suprise and I had to get the shot. At the time my wife and I were waiting to cross the street when that bus showed up. I told her that that exact sign reading can be found on a Ride On bus.

Thanks Tom! Our hotel was on Wisconsin and 2nd. I didn't really do any fanning, but everytime we went out, I'd had my camera in-hand and ready.

Have you ridden MCTS' new MetroEXpress limited-stop routes, the Red, Green and BlueLine? We rode the GreenLine to/from the airport. It makes the trip in about 30 min.

Hmm, wonder if the Red, Green and Blue lines are precursors for rail lines in Milwaukee? (this was done, to some extent, in Phoenix).

I was curious what the deal was with those colored routes.

Also, the 5300s look to be new. When I was up there last summer, I saw numbers as high as the 5200s. Milwaukee's fleet is somewhat boring; nothing but New Flyers.

Also, plenty of precedent for that sign reading not being consistent even in WMATALand. Remember SLVR SPGS on the headsigns?

Agreed. I'm a fan of New Flyer buses, but MCTS' fleet is definitely kinda boring. The D40LFRs are nice and fast, but they seem kinda sterile to me. I really like their D40LFs as they have a nice bassy sound and, I'm one of the few who prefer the original LF styling.

I don't' get why TAs have an obsession with abbreviating headsign readings. LED technology allows for different letter sizes and such, I find some of the abbreviations people catch in their photos and post here to be laughable. IIRC, the M1, 2, 3, and 4 say VIA MADISN on their headsigns, there is plenty of room for that last "O" on the sign yet it doesn't appear.

Well, a lot of those sign readings, if you recall, are carryovers from the days of the older flip dot signs, and Transit apparently didn't want to change the readings or offer two sets of readings for two different signs... Its the same with the Quebec TAs, especially Montreal, that have the most simplistic readings (carryovers from the streetcar days) such as 55 Saint-Laurent and 36 Monk in that they don't specify direction...although that's starting to change...

Also, you gotta love when TAs such as LA Metro use single-line sign readings despite LED signs these days offering double-lined signs with such clarity (e.g. the Luminator Titan)...

Milwaukee's D40LFs have Cummins ISCs and ISLs. The best ones are the 4400 & 4800s as they are the loudest. I also agree MCTSs fleet is boring but not as bad as Edmonton (350 New Flyers for Milwaukee vs 995 for Edmonton)

In Brooklyn, however, the newer signs have been updated to say: B41 via Flatbush Av instead of via Via Flatbsh, for instance. The Bx7 now spells out Washington Heights completely.

Right but I think that's because there isn't that many buses with older signs in those garages, so they can reprogram everything the way it's should be read...

I remember seeing signs like that back in the days:

Bx36 WASH HT GW BRIDGE

Bx19 BOTAN GDN

Bx2 VIA CONCRSE

Just to name a few...

Eh, I'd rather have the single-line readings than what SEPTA has ended up doing with their signs to be honest:

Photobucket

Photobucket

Photobucket

The signs are just ok up close, but from a distance they are really hard to read. The fact that SEPTA added the words "Transportation Center" to everything, especially when the signs used to just say Darby or Norristown, annoys me even more; they turn a very easy-to-read Darby, Norristown, or Chester to a microscopic and wordy "Darby Transportation Ctr", Norristown Transportation Ctr", etc.

I would agree that SEPTA could stand to abbreviate transportation ctr to something like "transit ctr" or even "trans ctr". However, I won't criticize them too much as they at least give decent info. My pet peeve is a destination sign reading that gives very little useful information. IMO, one of the biggest offenders is RTC in Las Vegas. Their Deuce route which operates along the Strip (Las Vegas Blvd) has it's north terminal at the Downtown Transit Center. My problem is that their destination sign reading indicates it's destination as "DTC". I imagine that a significant portion of the ridership on this route are tourists and to have a bus show up with a destination of "DTC" is not good (IMO).
