BRING BACK OUR BUS SERVICE!

That’s the rallying cry from Co-op City, where angry straphangers, among city riders facing yet another fare hike, rallied last week.

They’ve seen service cut back on two local bus lines, and one line chopped entirely, forcing many subway riders there into a two-fare zone.

Electeds, rider groups, unions and local groups were all represented at a rally on a greenway at the sprawling 60,000-resident housing complex on Wednesday, July 5.

Speakers called for restoring service cuts on the Bx26 and Bx28 in 2010 that created longer wait times, and eliminated service in Sections 1 to 4, forcing them to pay two fares to reach the nearest subway.

“It is very unjust for members of our community to pay not $5 to go to work, but $10, and in some cases $15 dollars a day, for the past two years,” said Section 5 resident Sebastian Ulanga, co-chair of the Co-op City Coalition Against MTA Cuts. “When the restorations come to the Bronx, Co-op City should be one of the communities on top of the list.”

There was also a call for restoration of the QBx1 and improvements for Access-A-Ride before a fare hike planned March 2013.

“It is past time for the MTA to restore these routes for the residents of the large part of Co-op City,” Engel said in a statement. “They deserve better than extra bus rides and transfer waiting time, especially in bad weather, meaning the heat and rain of summer as well as the cold of winter.”

The community has collected 5,000 signatures since the cuts to the Bx26 and Bx28 first occurred in 2010.

The MTA did restore some service that was cut on the Bx30, but many residents feel the cuts should have never happened, said Brodie Enoch, campaign manger for the Rider Rebellion. Assemblyman Michael Benedetto told the crowd he blamed the state in large part, severely cutting funding from 18% of the state’s budget 23 years ago to just “a trickle” today.

Benedetto said that in conversations with MTA chairman Joseph Lohta, he seemed open to finding a way to improve service for Co-op City.

“The entire development of Co-op City was promised when this development went up that they would have superb transportation alternatives,” said Benedetto. “And the cuts that were announced years ago were a betrayal of the trust that the people of Co-op City had in the MTA and the municipality of the city of New York.

As a fare increase looms, Senator Ruth Hassell-Thompson said that communities of color and those most in need seem to the be hardest hit by MTA cuts - with further cuts on the way.

MTA spokesman Kevin Ortiz denied - as some Transit Worker Union members have suggested - planned cuts in the number of buses on the Bx26 and Bx28 lines.

He said service will be increased on the Bx26 in the peak hours mornings and afternoons, with a slight cut on weekends, and no change in the number of Bx28 buses.

The MTA recently announced the restoration of weekend service on the Bx34 bus in Woodlawn and Norwood, and extension of the Bx13 south from East 161st Street to the Gateway Mall.

Also among those at the rally were Rev. Robert Smith of the Church of the Savior, representatives from Transportation Alternatives’ Rider Rebellion, the Transport Workers Union, Co-op City Coalition Against MTA Cuts, Retirees of Drieser Loop, and about hundred local transit riders.

Yep. We've got people here in Co-op City creating buzz about this, but some don't realize that there's too much overlapping, which was one reason the cuts were made in the first place! Do people realize how long the Bx28 ride was before the cuts in 2010? Going from Section 5 of Co-op City to Bartow Ave. & Baychester, seemed like an eternity, especially during the rush hour! I know some people here were inconvienced, but you can't expect the MTA to wave a magic wand & bring it back to the way it was! Wasn't the Bx30 revision enough? Apparently not!

After the back service, these people will not ride the bus.

They need bus service not because of inconvenience. They need bus service BECAUSE THEY WANT TO KEEP THEIR PROPERTY VALUE (LAND, HOUSE) HIGH.

[Speakers called for restoring service cuts on the Bx26 and Bx28 in 2010 that created longer wait times, and eliminated service in Sections 1 to 4....]

Really? Sections 1 thru 4 have ZERO BUS SERVICE? When were the Bx23, Bx30, Bx38, and Q50 discontinued and why has nobody heard about that before now??

I think the folks in Sections 1 thru 4 are just upset that Section 5 folks are now able to travel out of Co-op City without being forced to ride through their sections first.

Bx38 is infrequent since it is only half of the Bx28 service. Q50 even more infrequent. Bx30 doesn't even serve all of Co Op City, Bx23 only goes to Pelham Bay (can't get to the West Side from there). and isn't really that frequent outside of rush hours (unless you cross the street and take the Bx23 in any direction, which doesn't work for many people).

The flaws of the cuts have become more obvious to riders. The Bx30 goes the roundabout way by entering/leaving Co-op from the North. It takes longer to get to the (2) and (D), skips sections and puts you at the 1st stop on the (5) which has its pros and cons. This has always been the case but it was easier to ignore when you had 3 frequent routes (26,28,30) that made all made virtually the same connections. Now you have the least frequent of the three (30), half of the old 28 service and can only get to Norwood. IMO the Bx26 via Allerton was the fastest way to the (2) because there's less on Allerton than Gun Hill. It was already difficult enough to transverse the Bronx W-E but now a once 2 bus ride has become a 3 bus ride. The lack of direct service to Fordham outside most normal hours leads to a loss of connections. I won't say they need full service back on both but there's a valid argument here for restoring something.

I never understood why the QBx1 (Q50) was the only limited service within Co-op City. I may be wrong in assuming this but I always thought it would have been better to make the Bx28 Limited at least rush hours between Norwood and Co-op City (same stops as the Q50 in co-op), with the Limiteds running the whole route to Fordham and most locals as the short turns, than to split it into two separate services.

They never seem to know what to do what service on that side of the Bronx, the Bx4A/5/8/14/24 mess proved that and its a shame because those riders despite not seeming that far away, actually have to trek to the trains.

The Bx26 does what the Bx25 (the limited route which was eliminated) did - - run direct to/from Allerton without going to sections 2/3 (at the top of Co-Op city). And where are the facts that most riders in Co-Op city have a two fare zone? It was elmimated in 1997.

There was also a call for restoration of the QBx1 and improvements for Access-A-Ride before a fare hike planned March 2013.

The Bx23 and Q50 does the same routing as the combined QBx1 - - I do agree that more frequent and 24/7 service should be on the Bx23.

The Bx28 used to run every 5 minutes during the AM rush - - with the Bx28/38 split it reduces service with irregular start/end times on the Bx38. Swap the Bx28/38 route numbers and keep a consistent routing on the Bx28 which at night would be extended to Section 5 when the Bx38 is not running. If the ramps to Exit 12 (Baychester Ave) were a bit further up I95 when a direct Pelham Bay/Co Op City to Baychester Ave (entire length) would have been perfect - - complimenting the Bx16 or even extend along Pelham Parkway to Fordham Plaza.

The Bx25 wasn't a limited. It was the same as the current Bx28/38 pattern except it was just during rush hours.
