Miami EASY Card Issue

Called MDT today regarding EASY cards that I have since my last trip there in 2010 and they have no record of transactions with any of my cards. They have nothing to say but that I bought the cards empty and never used them, even though I have used them to get all over Miami during my time there. I even pinpointed the month and year for them and they said it's blank. And I know there was value left on all of the cards, maybe a total of $25. Not sure what to do if anything. I asked the agent to inform supervision that transactions may not be getting recorded or may have been erased, not only on my cards but in general.

I'm not sure I'm going back soon so I was looking for a refund. Even if they weren't going to give one to me, I still wanted to know the balances.

That's terrible, if true.

Do they expire? I have some breeze cards that are so old I wonder if they still work.
I would've assumed the value can't expire, but a lot of the things I read on here with people complaining about the MTA makes me think public agencies got around the new Banking regulations in regards to pre-paid or gift card style laws.

When I bought them, I remember reading, perhaps on the vending machine screen, that it would expire on that date in 2013. It was 2010. I can't believe they don't even record purchases. I'm holding them anyway - I want to see if they actually work if / when I get back there.

- Miami-Dade Transit Easy Card, good for 3 years, to have funds secured you need have registered the card with a nickname and your personal information, otherwise you have what occured to you. You should keeping searching for anwers since you said you bought them in 2010, but if you did not register..I don't know what to tell you.

- Miami-Dade Transit Easy Card, goo for 60 days, I don't think you can register this one.

May depend on the transit system. I had used a WMATA smart card last summer on my vacation. I had bought the card several years ago, but it still had value on it in 2012. Does Miami have a way to register transit smart cards like WMATA and MBTA does?

That sounds about right. I actually bought a WMATA SmarTrip card in 2008, registered it, and still had the funds on that card when I visited DC last summer. I guess every system does handles expiration dates on smart cards differently.

Yes, you can register the card online. I tried doing that as well but the value column came up blank on all of them.

Thank you for the information, but I think that's a crazy setup on the part of MDT. They should just record all transactions of cards automatically. So for example, they should know - once I give a serial number - the date, time, and location I bought the card, and the initial value. That should be whether or not I've registered the card.

Registration should only be an option if you want to protect the card and lock it to get your funds back when it goes missing.

But to have a card with value just go blank because it wasn't registered. . .nonsense.

Here is the thread from the first time I was there by the way. I was there again later that summer, last using all cards August 21, 2010.
