I've just received a news letter from Metro Magazine about the FTA awarding $787 million in grants. NJ Transit was one of the TAs to received federal grant money to purchase hybrid cruiser buses. For more information about this story and TAs across the country receiving this money for transit projects, such as, new buses, bus facilities, BRT ect. Go to Metro Magazine.

Here's the scoop:

At $27,260,000 million dollars. NJ Transit will purchase new hybrid cruiser buses to replace diesel buses that have met or exceeded their useful lives. The new hybrid buses will be over-the-road coaches that operate routes originating in southern New Jersey to and from New York City.

I think MCI might be awarded with this contract, but who knows nowadays with the head honchos on NJT. Remember they still have that order of CNG cruisers with DesignLine. Hey, what gives? What's taking DesignLine so long to build a CNG bus? Hmmmmm, should've went to MCI I suppose. Peace everyone!

Gee, I'm starting to wonder if this hybrid cruiser order will be what replaces the CNG MCIs instead of the Designline CNG order, I was under the impression that this CNG order may not even happen...as you said, it seems odd that there hasn't been a demo or a production sample, at least that we know of,...

If that is true. Fault NJ Transit headquarters to call up DesignLine to make a cruiser bus at low cost that DesignLine never built before.

What I'm really confused about is why they didn't go with MCI for that CNG order again. LADOT recently got an order of CNG coaches and NJT could've piggybacked off of them for this order to save some scratch instead of doing a full ground-up bus from DesignLine. We all know what happened when someone tried to make an innovative motorcoach but failed (cough cough AC Transit).

MCI was not the low bid winner.

And the people will suffer with crappy quality if DesignLine does not give the same performance that MCI has given NJT for decades.
