S89 - The final frontier |
|
Posted by B49 Limited on Tue Jul 24 01:19:50 2012 With the MTA lately focusing on new markets, I am surprise that in Staten Island there isn't more developments with interstate routes like the S89 which gave SIers an alternative way to Manhattan and Jersey City while we at it. The question is do you think the S89 experiment is the last of any service to/from NJ? Also is the S 89 a failure to a certain degree? (operating during rush hours only and no off peak service was never introduce now or before doomsday) |

Overall there is a job market in the Bayonne and Jersey City, but to have no midday service (at least) introduced is a bit surprising. Especially with this regine. It seems people forgot about this route... |

Maybe that is a good opportunity for the MTA to make some extra revenue. |

They need to implement an additional stop or 2 along Rt. 440 for the convenience of workers & shoppers, instead of running closed-door to the HBLR. Unless there is a restriction by NJT or NJDOT,this could help increase ridership. |

Not only that, but the MTA, an agency funded in part by sales taxes in NYC and it's immediate suburbs, isn't going to run a line to bring SHOPPERS to another state, where their sales taxes DON'T support them. Not to mention the local businesses on Staten Island being up in arms about what would essentially be a subsidy to a New Jersey shopping center. |

It's been happening over a decade or so before my friend. Staten Islanders who commute to Jersey City to work do shop here in New Jersey. Have you heard of "Newport Mall" and area stores, such as Target and Staples around it? All the workers have to do is hop on the HBLR to Newport Mall station. There goes New York City tax dollars feeding it into New Jersey (Jersey City). |

That's not running a bus for the PURPOSE of bringing shoppers to the plaza. Unlike the other four boros, the majority of Staten Islanders own cars, and they're not going to lug their purchases home on the HBLR and bus. |
