Per nyctf and ttmg Orion 5.501s 6000-6097 to be renumbered to 9700-9797 since the incoming 2011-2012 Nova LFS Artics will now bear numbers 6000-6097.

Really? Why would they do that and not just continue on to 1291-1600s Those slots are open. It makes no sense to me. In my opinion.

From 1290, it's open all the way to 2039. However, the next big rigid order may take up part of that series (even though 8090-8749 is open except for 2 numbers---8319 and 8571).

Great, yet ANOTHER unnecessary MTA bus renumbering! Why can't the MTA just renumber the Nova's into the 9700's? It seems pointless to renumber a fleet that's likely going to be retired in about 5 years or so!

Because they have to think about the future. If the new Nova's are numbered in the 9700 series, then after the current beese in the 9000 series are all scrapped within the next few years, then 9700 is taken up with all the others open numerically.

When some of you guys grow up you can take the test, get promotions into high places, then start making decisions like this!

7100-7559 are cuurrently avail so why not renumber 4902-5249 to 7300-7259. so then you would have 4900-5509 and eventualy by(2015)5769 .

No it's not. There are a lot of buses in NYC and there are only 9999 road numbers available.

It makes a lot of sense to me. By changing the 6 to a 9, all the 9000 buses are old, so in a few years that entire block of 1000 numbers will be available.

Could the MTA ever use 10XXX series again like they did with the 93000-series Orion 5s when they were first introduced?

No and the reason for that is the computers they are using (as what was told me) could not handle five digit numbers in the database. Hence, #93001-93096 to #101-196 and #93502-93053 to #8402-8403 (Yes, the TNMCs were like that too and there's a picture of one of them on someone's site.)

I get your point of view, Bill, I know why they're doing this, but I'm still a bit disgusted over this. There's other numbers they could have used, as noted by others here, but I liked those buses with their original fleet numbers. I think I get the gist of what the MTA is doing here. All of those buses are over a decade old, not going to be around after a few more years. When all of the Orion V's & Nova RTS's are finally retired with the 9xxx numbers, those numbers can be used for future fleets, without having to renumber OTHER buses in the current fleet. At least that's what I thought about all this...

[No and the reason for that is the computers they are using (as what was told me) could not handle five digit numbers in the database.]

IIRC, that was intentional on the part of the programmer who set up that database. ("We don't currently use 5-digit fleet numbers, so I'll make sure the system can never allow them.")

It probally wasent deliberate, it was probally more along the line, we have never used these in the past; and at the time have no reason to use them, so...

Although if the system is that old mabye its time to upgrade the system?
