Expired Metrocard

I had to take a bus the other day, the last time I used my Metrocard was in March. As the bus was arriving, I pulled out my Metrocard and noticed that it expired on June 30th. This was July 5th. When I put the card in, it read "expired" on the bus's display. The driver looked at his watch to check the date, and let me on. I told him I was going to replace it at the subway station. I could not use the Metrocard machine to just transfer the money from the old card to the new one, as it would not accept a "0.00" amount to add, so I went to the station agent and she gave me a new card. When I inserted the card in the subway turnstile, it deducted the fare (so I didn't cheat the MTA). I assume that the bus did not subtract any money from the expired card. Two interesting items I noticed on the bus: the display that reads "adult fare, student, etc. ) was missing and the handwritten bus number on the metrocard reader and the "red sign in front of the driver did not match the number plate on the inside where the destination control box was mounted on. However, the outside of the bus might have had the correct matching #. Since a passenger on the bus would only look at that incorrect # on the display board, it would make it difficult to correctly identify the bus if it was later necessary to do so.

I believe the MTA has phased out the fare annunciator.

Red sign? do you mean the "Do Not Touch The Driver" sign?

Farebox numbers and coach numbers have no relation to each other. Sometimes a hostler will write down the coach number on the farebox to make their job a little easier, but that's just for them.

Are you saying the coach numbers inside and outside did not match?

I didn't get a chance to look at the outside #, but the fare box # and whatever # is on the red sign above the driver matached, but the long black rectangular bracket that holds the display panel had a different number.

I thing you can transfer value from an expired card to a new card at a machine without adding value. You tell the machine you're going to add value. When you insert the expired card it asks if you want a new card, but doesn't make you add the value.

Yup, I did that recently. My card had expired earlier, I ran down to one of the mini MVMs (forgot the name) and said I would refill. It did the "trade in cards" thing and I got a new card without me needing to add value or use my credit card.

I recently traded in a bunch of cards with expiration dates of 6/30/12 and 7/31/12.

The vending machines offer trade to a new card if the date of attempted refill is from 1 month before to 1 year after the card's expiration date.
