THIS IS THANKS TO MY DEDICATE PETITION.
Everyone, good news!! I got email from Michael Seltzer who was target of my petition.

From my EMail:
Michael Seltzer, CEO of Nassau Inter County Express, a target of the petition you created on SignOn.org, “Demand Veolia to Restore N2/N8, N21, N23/N27, N78/N79” (http://signon.org/si...olia-to-restore), sent the following message to constituents who signed your petition.

This message was sent through the SignOn.org system. The email addresses of the signers of your petition have NOT been shared with the sender.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Thanks for your suggestions. We have been monitoring daily operations since the April 8 schedules went into effect as well as listenting to customers' reactions. On June 24 we begin summer schedules as a mattter of course, so we will take that opportnunity to install some fine tuning based on actual results.

We have made improvements to many of the lines you are concerned about. The n27 weekday off peak will now travel to Roosevelt Field Mall, giving those customers plenty of options to travel to Hempstead and other destinations as well. We’re adding more trips on the n27 to Hempstead and n23 to Mineola at night. We also adjusted trip times on the n78/79 to help the connection to the 24 flow smoother. On the n21 we added an additional southbound trip in the evening.

WE think these changes will improve many of the conditions you write to us about. NICE is still contractually bound to operate only as much service as the County can afford based on revenues from all sources; County, State, Federal and farebox, and therefore cannot meet everyones' needs, but instead must concentrate on putting the service where the need is greatest.

Good news indeed. NICE may have had their share of stumbles, but I give them a lot of credit for being one of the more responsive transit agencies when it comes to customer concerns. Compare this to the opaque service planning process at the MTA.

I agree, they are much more customer friendly in regards to the needs of the community, which has been consistant by this company.

Im telling you.. AS someone mention in the past post, what if NICE becomes successful in the next 5 years in mainting the ballance of their budget and still operate a decent bus system, could that be threat to the end of MTA in NYC....

On past Saturday, 16:30 N27 Glen Clove left Roslyn Station 2 minutes early, and all N27 riders on 15:45 N23 Manorhaven had to wait in hot sun for hour, since it arrived train station 16:30.

Did you are anyone ask for the A/C to be turned on?

I never been on a SBC bus with the A/C off, except for once though another passenger asked for it to be turned on and the driver did, the driver also made it sound like it is policy not to turn the A/C on unlessed easked, or at least not on very hot days.

Though I have been told that if SBC gets complaints about their drivers they are quick to investigate.

No - the unions will never allow it in New York City. Bloomberg could have gone to a company like Veolia instead of the MTA to take over the private bus lines, but even that would have been a fight.

I could see Veolia making a play to win the Bee Line, Suffolk Transit or Transport of Rockland contracts the next time they are up, though.

The closed Veolia would come to operating Suffolk Transit is if they beat out for one contract, I don't see them getting all three contracts nor do I see the county being able to put all the routes in one bid. (Suffolk Bus, EBT, and Twin Forks AKA Sunrise and Hampton Jitney would surely argue and sue the county again)

The only part of Suffolk Transit I could see them solely operating is the Para Transit divison which is currently solely operated by Suffolk Bus.(though due to Suffolk Bus operating that by themselfs for so long they would peopbably fight the loss of that two)

Never say never
We have non-union charter schools.

Bloomberg has been union busting for the past 5 years.

He seeds charter schools in public school buildings and then slowly kills off the public school.

Where is organized labor?

It's all in how you write up the bid and contract. ST could very easily write up a litigation-proof proposal that requires a single contractor to operate the whole system.

Doubt it, unless the counties agree. Suffolk has ownership of their routes which they won in a lengthy lawsuit that was started in the late '90's. (thats how they were able to cut operators because Suffolk had to agree to competitive bidding with the last contract in order for them to get the claim that they own the routes)

I think Nassau owns their bus routes.

Probably it either had recently broke or it wasn't hot enough to warrant (of SBC's end) that bus to not be sent out.

If it happen recently, then it could be that maybe Suffolk Bus has a a few broken down buses, I heard that again the S66 was missing one of its regular buses and last Wendsday had 1035 not arrived on time to Patchouge 9Appenently earlier in the day the driver told dispatch that he was running late) they almost assigned 2005 to the S61.

They could, but the oompanies would still argue, I mean it took about eight years to settle who had ownership of the bus routes. That resulted in the agreement to cometetvily bid the routes, which in turn caused the downfall of CBS Lines. (if my contact who told me how the last bid was went was correct)

Besides the county would probably have to prove that one sole operator is cheaper then the current three. Besides the County is bad a giving out sole contracts, they were busted by the county comptrollor for giving Suffolk Bus more money then they should have when they last renewed the Para-Transit contract.

The schedules could be adjusted so that the final trips end in Riverhead. I could see Veolia just needing to find 3 spots to house buses: near Republic Airport for the western routes, in Ronkonkoma or Holtsville, and then somewhere near Calverton or Quogue.

I don't think the county would adjust trips just because it would better work for the company. I mean if they would do that for Veolia then why won't they do that for Sunrise Coach so that all the S92 trips ended or started in Greenport so there wouldn't be a need to house buses at Hampton Jitney for S92 service. Or for Suffolk Bus Corp so that the last S66 that ends in Riverhead so it wouldn't be a long dead head back to the yard.

Besides all the companies that currently operate Suffolk Transit has given money in the past to the Democratic party for Levy, so I have a feeling that Veolia even if they tried to get a Contract I doubt they will. (I mean we are talking about a county that gave Suffolk Bus Corp 5 million to operate the Para Transit when the County Comptrollor said it could be done for like two million or so less)

Also the County Comptrollor is almost always investigating the companies that operate Suffolk Transit every about other year, and if Veolia is as bad as everyone says they are, I dobut they would want someone doing that.

Until the early 1980's when the "S92" was 4 buses a day with SDH Suburban Fishbowls with home-built rear freight compartments no less, the East Hampton originating bus in the AM and the terminating one in the PM actually deadheaded out of Greenport very early in the morning, and returned late at night by running via Route 114: across North and South Ferries and Shelter Island. They may also have had some freight contracts with them. They generally used the 35 footer, #fleet #102 for that.

The Sunrise bus that originated in East Hampton NEVER dead-headed across Shelter Island in the AM and return the same; the bus was always housed or parked on the South Fork. I can recall the locations being in Sag Harbor. The regular driver for that run also lived on the South Fork. (I recall three drivers over a period of about 25 years). To cover vacations, days off, etc. a driver from Greenport drove to Sag Harbor to pick up the bus, do the two roundtrips, and return back to Greenport. Made for a long day. The bus was fueled and cleaned during the brief AM layover in Greenport.

The aforementioned freight compartments in the rear of the GM Fishbowls (#101, #102 & #106) were custom built by Hudson Body(?) in New Jersey. Some of the freight carried consisted of auto parts, newspapers, and fresh fish (for restaurants).

The 102 was a 35 footer.
The 106 came in the late 1960's, replaced an Old Look Suburban 104 or the GM Torpedo 103. 106 was actually a flat floor transit with no exit door, had standee windows, but forward facing seats nonetheless.

They had no AC, just window sill blowers, yet never seemed miserable on a summer day.

I remember one bus driver looked like Ralph Kramden. He may have been the South Shore guy. Another guy was short, chubby, jolly, and had a crewcut.

The resaon I though they deadheaded across is that I peeked thru the ticket office of the North Ferry, saw a list of commercial customers, and Sunrise Coach was on the list.

I miss those unique buses. They had personality and lasted a long time. They have been gone 30 years. Wish I could find a picture.

I even saw the 101 or 102 sub for a LIRR Road'n'Rail when it broke down in Greenport. I don't know who drove it to Babylon.

You were probably looking at a Fishbowl list. I have that somewhere.

103 was a Suburban Old Look with manual transmission. It was a sub when 101 or 102 was not working. I do not know what 101 and 102 replaced.

There was also a 105, another "Torpedo" bus (PD-3702 ?). I remember seeing it around 1965 in front of their garage, painted in the light brown livery with a For Sale sign.

The 106 serial number was right in line with some 5306's that Bee Line bought numbered in the upper 600's (like 691). Strange Sunrise didn't want a S6H. I remember a Sunrise driver saying "we hate that bus".

Around 1981, I was on the Shelter Island North Ferry on the same boat as the 102. Maybe it was on a charter.

They also had a couple of PD4106's, some Buffalos, then Prevosts. I have seen the GM Parlors on scheduled route service as well.

The GM New Look freight buses were initially replaced by the first tranche of Gilligs, numbered in the 120's, then 9500's, now New Flyers. There are all a dime a dozen.

Wonder if anyone at Sunrise mgmt today knows of their interesting operations until county takeover ? I remember them threatening around 1970 to reduce scheduled frequencies to 2 buses a day if the County did not give them emergency subsidies.

Ok I have a #103 listed as a 1964 GM PD-4106. Though I check every list of New Looks and Old Looks and couldn't find anything for Sunrise earlier then #101. Of course I'm not saying that they didn't exist, because obviously if you saw them then they existed, just that I have no record of them being brought stright from GM. The only other explanation is that they brought them second hand from another company.

They weren't the only company asking for emergency subsidies from the county in the 70's. Coram Bus Service asked for some for their Smith Haven Mall to Smith Point Beach (which would become the now defunt S74) route.

The Gilligs where numbered #125-127. I know Sunrise had two 1981 New Flyers #119-120 that they sent to Coram after the Gilligs (125-127) arrived because, from what I heard, either the drivers or the company didn't like them.
