The carrier is partnering with Hampton Luxury Liner to provide 15 daily round trips from Manhattan's East Side to Ronkonkoma and Riverhead, starting this fall. "The region is ripe for this type of service, with people currently commuting into the city on the LIRR to Penn Station," said David Hall, the Dallas-based general manager of BoltBus, a division of Greyhound Lines. "This new service takes you direct to the East Side; we think people will find that more convenient." Mike Schoolman, president of Bohemia-based Classic Transportation, which owns Hampton Luxury Liner and Classic Coach bus services, said the BoltBus schedule and exact locations of the Manhattan departure and arrival points are still being determined. Hampton Luxury Liner has five New York City departure points on Lexington Avenue between 40th and 86th streets that it uses for daily service between the Hamptons and Manhattan. It also offers winery tours to the North Fork from Manhattan and Long Island locations. Classic Coach provides charter buses and makes five daily trips from Long Island to Atlantic City. BoltBus, with wireless Internet access, power outlets and extra legroom, operates among Washington D.C., Baltimore, Philadelphia, New York City and Boston. The price for a Ronkonkoma to New York City ticket would be less than $15, Schoolman said. A Riverhead trip price has not been determined. The new bus concept has the support of Islip, Brookhaven and Riverhead towns. "We feel it's an important transportation option for the East End and will complement the existing Long Island Rail Road service -- especially in special-events situations such as the recent Tall Ships or the Riverhead Country Fair," said Chris Kempner, Riverhead community development director. Hampton Luxury Liner will operate as the Long Island licensee for BoltBus. Hall and Schoolman said the operation would target both the Long Island commuter and tourist markets. "Around 50 million people visit New York City a year and most don't hire cars," Schoolman said. "Having a service like Bolt to quickly, efficiently and comfortably bring them to Long Island would facilitate spending at our hotels, museums and other attractions, such as the wineries and beaches." The two planned stops on Long Island are at the Courtyard Marriott hotel in Ronkonkoma and the Hilton Garden Inn opposite the Tanger Factory Outlet in Riverhead. Passengers also could arrange package deals to visit other attractions. ... "The goal is getting people out of cars and decongesting our very busy Long Island Expressway," he said. "This is another option to take cars off the road when the roads are busy." LIRR president Helena Williams said the railroad would welcome competition and the promise of more tourists and jobs for Long Island. "But the LIRR remains the fastest and greenest way to Manhattan from Ronkonkoma," she said. |

Given time, it may be possibe that Bolt Bus may have a good customer base to Riverhead/Tanger Outlets, especially after mid-October when the LIRR will no longer offer the Greenport scoot on weekends until May, 2013. But the LIRR can change their minds (yea, cost) and restore the two round trip limited weekend service year-round. |

Who would take the bus to/from KO? The train service out there is pretty good, during the rush hour they're insanely crowded but still is the LIE.I forsee the KO service being discontinued in a few years, unless its extended to the airport. Riverhead, on the other hand, will probably be a big success because HJ charges $22 to get out there and has an outbound-oriented schedule. |

There is a budget neutral way to serve Greenport on non-summer weekends.Run one round trip out of Ronkonkoma with a 4 hour lay-over in Greenport. That's one shift, 2 man crew, not going to break the bank. Kill one of the 3 daytime Montauk jobs east of Speonk. |

It's the "insanely crowded" part that will get a few people to drop their cars at the hotel and ride comfortably with reserved seating and WiFi.Ronkonkoma is part of a very big project going on in the area - it all ties together with the idea of keeping younger folks on the island. |

Hampton Jitney is overpriced and doesn't even carry within LI. They will do very well with the Ronkonkoma-Riverhead service, considering the LIRR has limited service and weekend service will end by the fall.I'm sure the powerful folks at Hampton Jitney will try hard to put a stop to it, just like they have done with the LIRR. LIRR service is bad on the east end (in particular the Greenport branch) for a reason... HJ is starting that new Sag Harbor-Greenport ferry and it will be overpriced at $11 each way (in comparison FI Ferries are around $7 or $8). Finally the HJ monopoly will be coming to an end. If Bolt steals enough HJ riders they may be able to take it over outright...good riddance to the Snob Coach! |

Well the Courtyard is pretty close to the LIRR Ronkonkoma station, and I'd use it to get to Tanger instead of the limited Scoot service or a lengthy ST ride. This could be great for intra-island riders, as long as they dont copy HJ's "if you're not traveling to/from NYC you dont count" method. This could also finally force the LIRR to improve Greenport service. At least have year round service on weekends! I'm not sure how much parking is available at Courtyard, but this could be a great Park and Ride concept, esp during the holidays when parking at Tanger is impossible. |

Nothing I've read has said that BOLT would carry within Long Island. The only involvment I know Hampton Jitney has with that new ferry service is that they would be seeling tickets at one of their offices that are close to the Sag Harbor end, other then that I haven't heard of HJ having any part in the service itself. You are aware that the LIRR has been around longer then Hampton Jitney, so I can't see how they could have done anything to make LIRR service out east what it is. |
