edf40wrjww2msgDetailB:detailStr fiogf49gjkf0d The low-fare bus service MegaBus is set to begin services Tuesday in Austin despite opposition from the City and pressure from a local disability rights group.
The inter-city bus company had planned to board passengers and their luggage from Dobie Mall at Guadalupe Street and W 21st Street beginning Tuesday morning, but last Friday the City of Austin issued a “cease and desist” order to the company requiring that they conduct operations at an off-street terminal facility to limit disruption of normal traffic operations.
However, on Tuesday morning MegaBus released a statement confirming plans to begin operations with no mention of the City’s order. According to MegaBus, the bus is scheduled to depart at around noon from the Dobie Mall.
Furthermore, ADAPT of Texas says they’re holding a press conference Tuesday to discuss concerns and show evidence that MegaBus has already discriminated against and violated the civil rights of Texas customers with disabilities.
ADAPT says that according to a previous settlement agreement with the United States Department of Justice, MegaBus had 365 days to “alter its online reservation services so that passengers with disabilities are able to access schedule information and make reservations in the same manner and using the same reservation system as other passengers.” According to disability rights activist Jennifer McPhail, “MegaBus sells all their tickets on their website.”
