Customers must have been pissed dealing with therse buses especially on the express routes. Did the Greyhound buses help more then the WMATA buses did for express service? And i know that some depots used the METROBUS for express service but what did boroughs like Brooklyn and Queens use? Customers must have been pissed dealing with therse buses especially on the express routes. Did the Greyhound buses help more then the WMATA buses did for express service? And i know that some depots used the METROBUS for express service but what did boroughs like Brooklyn and Queens use? My guess is that the X-bus riders probably didn't hate getting a WMATA buses. Although they had transit seating, it was 2X2 soft seating. Not quite as comfy as the high-backed seating, but in those days you'd see plenty of local buses doing express runs. The WMATA buses at OA didn't do express service as FFS and AMS didn't have any express routes. It appears that SI used the WMATA buses for both local and express service, but again. SI also used plenty of local buses on express runs. I say this to say... In my observations, the WMATA buses were used mainly in local service, but they often did Staten Island express trips too. Of course the 150 ex-Greyhound MC-8 were used only for express service. During those days most NYCTA express buses were still the mixed bag of GMC T6H-5305A (4400, 8800 & 8900 series), 5310A (4500, 6100 & 6900 series), a few 5303AC (83/8400 series), '77 Flxible 9100 series and of course the '81 GMC RTS (1298-1317) and '82 RTS (PA1705-PA1858). Later toward the mid-1980s, the 5100 & 5500 series Blitz rebuilds helped too. By the mid-1980s, the old new-looks were pretty much gone from exopress service. On Staten island they were using the Greyhound MC-8s, '81 RTS, and some '82 RTS. In Brooklyn and Queens the '82 1700-1800 series RTS were used for express service. I think the Blitz rebuilds and '85 GMC RTS pretty much replaced the ex-Greyhound MC-8s. Those were interesting days as a lot was happening. |

I remember very very clearly riding the dc buses on.Lexington avenue and also on 79 th street crosstown m17. I was fortunate enough to be heading downtown on lex in unreal traffic from 86 down to 42 on a flex. I think the trip took an hour. I remember the interior colors were brown and orange. In those days these buses were very common . The 79 street had the fishbowlsf I remember. These were my highschool years but I really do have a pretty clear memory of those buses. The fishbowls were not brown and orange they had kind of a very light mint one of color going on can't remember too clearly. |

Retired buses from DC shipped to NYC to replace questionable Grumman Flxibles. We'll probably never see something like this again.Bill Newkirk |

It sure was Bill, how about when they practically emptied the old Brooklyn Army Terminal of all the 2000's & 3000's & 4000's & 5000's that would run and put them back into service and parked all the Grumman's down there. I recall going down there quite a few times to photograph with the late / great Alan Bromberger. |

WMATA had them in their contingency fleet. The funny thing is that many of those buses buses were Blitzed and operated in WMATA service 'til '99-'00. |
