An unoccupied bus, disabled and under tow, burst into flames on the Long Island Expressway Tuesday evening, snarling traffic as Plainview firefighters put down the inferno.

The Plainview Fire Department responded to a fully involved bus fire just after 10 p.m. on the eastbound LIE at Sunnyside Boulevard in Plainview.

At the time, the electric powered bus was disabled and being towed. The tow truck operator noticed the fire in his window and contacted authorities.

The tow truck driver was taken to Nassau University Medical Center to be treated for smoke inhalation, firefighters said. One Plainview firefighter sustained a minor injury as was treated at the scene.

The bus is owned by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and was bearing New York City insignias.

Firefighters used streams of firefighting foam to extinguish the stubborn fire. The eastbound lanes of the LIE and the ramps at exit 46 were closed for several hours in the vicinity of the fire, authorities reported.

Firefighters were under the command of Chief of Department Craig Robinson.

Wonder if it was a towing issue, seeing how the flames are coming from the wheel wells and not the engine compartment.

?????

How often do you see MTA/NYCT buses on flatbed trucks (relative to how often you see them being towed normally)?

Possibly towing issue, if you dont cage the rear brakes or not enough it can cause a fire. There are other possibilities also.

Maybe receiving some kind of work out east near Ronkonkoma ?

There is a bus repair facility on Vet's Hwy, though the name escapes me at the moment.

A couple of years ago, I saw an MTA bus or two parked outside.

Mother Clara Hale depot REGULARLY had buses moved around on flatbed trucks. The short wheelbase of the Orion campared to the RTS makes the flatbed the better choice to move a disabled bus. Less worry about raising the front which can cause the rear end to drag on the street due to overhang from rear wheels aft.

Hmm... That probably explains why MCH dumped their RTS buses elsewhere. Back in '99 to about '00, MCH sent their Novas to Kingsbridge & Gun Hill to make room for more Orions. Specifically, #9111-9124 to KB, and #9225-9139 & #9186 to GH. I used to ride on the Bx19, when MCH had the route, and after I saw those RTS's transfer out, I never saw any RTS's running from MCH ever again.

Atlantic Detroit Diesel is gone from Vets Highway, Ronkonkoma. Replaced by Cummins. Seen it with my own eyes over 3 months ago. One problem with flat bedding these buses, 11 foot 3 inches tall. You don't want to rip off a battery box going under an overpass. Imagine the fun if that happens!

You don't need to cage the brakes. That's what the air hose from the tow truck is for. You pull the rear axles out, not bad to do at all. You don't really want to tow one of these things from the rear. The front is almost dragging the ground.

Maybe Atlantic's demise had something to do with the bus fire last year, either that or there is a big lack of Detriot Diesel operators on Long Island

Ah so it would seem that there weren't a lot of customers, though I doubt the fire helped matters. Especially since one of the buses destroied was a county bus, though from what I heard I'm sure that the company that operated the destored bus pobably got some of the blame to.
