SI Division

They're doing a great job these days, anyone else agree? There are some much wanted service proposals but overall the SI Division in 2012 is doing an awesome job in all areas. I wish the MTA would split the S44 with Castleton to get some of the new buses on that line.

Actually, I would suggest that the rush hour short-turns be assigned to Castleton, as well as the S57 and S59, solely to save money. (All would have run-ons and run-offs in the Port Richmond area.)

Some of the drivers switch buses at the Yukon Depot, but yeah, it would definitely save money to have the S57, S59, and rush hour S44s based out of Castleton.

Why have the S59 out of Castleton full-time when it passes right in front of Yukon? Maybe have some S59s start and end at Yukon Avenue instead of deadheading to Port Richmond or Tottenville.

The northern terminus of the S59 is about 2,000 feet from the garage. Some of the rush-hour trips should be out of Charleston.

Well one bus line doesn't reflect on the entire division as a whole, but I agree the S44 is a garbage line, especially with all the lowlives who use the line and don't pay.

Trust me, I see groups of kids come on the bus and They don't fucking pay. The School give kids Student Metrocards and they don't use them. I have to miss my boat and wait 20-30Mins because they get on and don't pay. I should save money and don't pay for the bus.

Agreed, I would definitely like to see Castleton add some short-turn runs to Yukon routes. I believe the S57 and S59 already have some runs based out of Castleton during school hours.

One bus route does not represent the entire SI Division. But, the S44 has been bad for as long as I can remember when it comes to timeliness, speed & not being timed with the ferry.

The MTA should run about 5-6 buses an hour on the S44 with more Castleton buses than Yukon buses, primarily because the new buses have cameras. A couple of buses could terminate in Port Richmond, because the line really needs help. Using BusTime for the S44 is interesting and a real head-scratcher at times.

The S44 is definitely a troubled route that needs to be examined and re-examined. It should run somewhat like the S46 with short-turns in Port Richmond instead of the Teleport so at least there's a chance of catching the ferry using that line. Most S44 buses arrive late at St. George seconds after the ferry departs.

I would send the S76 to Charleston and give Castleton the S44. Maybe if the S44 had better service, riders would be more inclined to pay?

You could do that, but there's no point when the Castleton Depot is less than a mile from the terminal (Just go straight down Park, make a left on Castleton, and you're right there)

You could just split it between the 3 depots. Some rush hour runs could be based out of Charleston (since they start/end at Tottenville), some trippers for those schools near the mall could be based out of Yukon, and the rest can be based out of Castleton.

What does them not paying have to do with you missing the ferry? In fact, it speeds up the trip if they don't dip in a Student MetroCard because then they can all just jump on instead of lining up to pay. In fact, a couple of days ago, myself and a bunch of other students got on the S46, and they were all loaded within a matter of 15 seconds tops. (I was the only one who took the time to pay, so at least 2 or 3 of those seconds were due to me dipping in my Student MetroCarD)

Those Teleport runs aren't short-turns. The difference in distance between St. George-West Shore Plaza and St. George-Teleport is negligable. In any case, unfortunately, the S44 doesn't warrant any additional service as far as ridership goes, but in the later part of midday, they should allow an extra cushion. I mean, around 1PM, they allow a 7 minute cushion, which generally works from experience, but around 3PM, they only allow a 1 minute cushion, which likely results in a lot of missed connections.

I think they really need to reevaluate the scheduling too. From experience, those buses that leave the SI Mall around 5PM or 5:30 generally don't run into as many problems as those leaving around 3PM or so, and yet they allot more running time to the runs at 5PM. I remember on a recent trip, the B/O had to kill a good 10 minutes at least because he was alloted too much time, and yet earlier in the day, people are likely missing their ferries because of too little time.

As for the second comment, I doubt that. You might attract more riders who would pay, but the riders who currently farebeat would likely continue to do so.

And there's no point in sending the S76 to Charleston.

If that's the case then why was the S57 sent to Yukon? Simple: so a bus deadheading to/from New Dorp won't have to go all the way to Castleton. Same reason why the S59 is at Yukon: buses going to/from Tottenville won't have to deal with a rather lengthly deadhead to Castleton. For the S57, the deadhead from Yukon to New Dorp is less time than the deadhead from New Dorp to Castleton.

Here is in my opinion what depots the local buses should be at(and i know everyone will complain)

S40/S90-Castleton
S42-Castleton
S44/S94-Yukon
S46/S96-Castleton
S48/S98-Castleton
S51/S81-Castleton
S52-Castleton
S53/S93-Castleton
S54-Can be either Yukon or Castleton
S55/S56-Charleston
S57-Castleston(not sure why it went to Yukon)
S59-Yukon
S61/S91-Yukon
S62/S92-Yukon
S66-Castleton
S74/S84-Charleston
S76/S86-Castleton
S78-Charleston
S79-Right now it's Yukon but once SBS starts, i'm thinking it will be Charleston as can Yukon handle artics for this line ?

Also, did anyone see the damage allready to Prevost #2442? Looks bad and was on the driver's side. Noticed it on the X5 Tuesday.
