edf40wrjww2msgDetailB:detailStr fiogf49gjkf0d The New Jersey Department of Transportation today announced the replacement of the South Marginal Street bridge deck over Park Avenue in Weehawken, Hudson County.
Initial construction is scheduled to begin this Saturday, May 19, with NJDOT’s contractor, Sparwick Contracting Inc., implementing a long-term closure of the left travel lane, reducing South Marginal Street from two travel lanes to one.
The bridge deck replacement will be accomplished in two stages, with one lane of traffic maintained at all times. Pedestrian access will be maintained along South Marginal Street. The last eastbound local exit ramp off of Route 495 (for Weehawken/Hoboken/Ferries to NYC) will also be reduced from two lanes to one during construction.
South Marginal Street is a one-way (eastbound) connector roadway running parallel to the Route 495 eastbound elevated highway leading to the Lincoln Tunnel. South Marginal Street carries traffic underneath the Lincoln Tunnel helix, providing access to Weehawken and Hoboken waterfront destinations as well as to the Lincoln Tunnel.
In addition to the replacement of the existing structurally deficient bridge deck, NJDOT will resurface the bridge approaches and upgrade the existing sidewalks in the area immediately adjacent to the bridge. The $1.3 million project will also make structural repairs to an adjacent section of the Route 495 viaduct support structure. Construction is scheduled for completion, with all lanes reopened to traffic, in late-September 2012.
NJ State Police will handle traffic management around the area during peak travel hours.
Many of NJ TRANSIT’s bus routes traveling on eastbound South Marginal Street may operate with delays near the immediate construction area. All customers on these affected bus routes are advised to allow for extra travel time getting to and from their destination.
NJDOT is utilizing Dynamic Message Signs to notify motorists of the upcoming traffic pattern changes. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT’s traffic information website www.511nj.org for construction updates and real-time travel information.

As if the perfect storm of three major spectator events in New Jersey this weekend wasn’t enough...
Beginning Saturday, one of two eastbound lanes on South Marginal Street in Weehawken is scheduled to close for repairs, resulting in a significant reduction in traffic capacity along the roadway adjacent to Route 495 in the area of the Lincoln Tunnel, officials said.
As a result, many of NJ Transit’s bus routes on eastbound South Marginal Street will operate with delays, and the domino effect of delays could affect New Jersey-bound passengers waiting for the buses to arrive at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Midtown Manhattan.
The four-month construction project begins as the Bamboozle music festival continues Saturday in Asbury Park, the Electric Daisy Carnival dance music fest continues at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford and the New Jersey Devils play the New York Rangers in a playoff hockey match at the Prudential Center in Newark, leading to what NJ Transit officials are calling the busiest weekend in the history of the statewide transportation agency.
The construction will affect the following New York-bound bus routes: No. 107 (from Irvington), 108 (Newark), 111 (Jersey Gardens), 115 (Rahway), 121 (North Bergen), 123 (Jersey City), 124 (Secaucus), 125 (Jersey City/Journal Square), 127 (Ridgefield/Union City), 129 Secaucus/Union City), 144 (Elmwood Park/Hackensack), 154 (Fort Lee/Palisades Park), 156 (Englewood Cliffs), 159 (Fort Lee), 160 (Elmwood Park/Wallington), 161 (Paterson/Passaic), 163 (Ridgewood), 167 (Harrington Park), 190 (Paterson/Rutherford), 191 (Willowbrook/Montclair), 192 (Clifton), 195 (Willowbrook/Cedar Grove) and 199 (Clifton/Lyndhurst).
These local bus routes also will be affected: 22/22X (North Bergen/Union City/Hoboken) 84P (North Bergen/Jersey City/Journal Square/Park Avenue Service), 86 (Union City to Newport Centre) and 89 (North Bergen to Hoboken).
