Port Authority Wants Megabus Gone From Bus Terminal

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey has finally weighed in on Megabus' stop outside of their bus terminal — it wants the discount carrier out.

Megabus has been operating an outdoor hub on West 41st Street between Eighth and Ninth avenues — in the shadow of the terminal — since February.

In a letter sent today to the Department of Transportation, the Port Authority asked the DOT not to renew the discount operator's permit allowing them to operate there free of charge, citing numerous safety concerns.

The permit is set to expire on Monday.

“Running a major long-haul bus operation on a city street outside one of the world’s busiest bus facilities is unsafe, risky and simply not smart,” said Port Authority Executive Director Pat Foye in a statement.

“During the two-month pilot program, the arrangement’s impact on the safety of pedestrians and on our facility has been of concern to us and we encourage the city to seek a more appropriate and less dangerous location for Megabus to run its operations.”

According to the Port Authority, long lineups of passengers waiting to board Megabus' double-deckers frequently block the terminals lower level bus exit onto West 41st Street during peak times.

The PA also said that many luggage-dragging Megabus passengers cross in the middle of West 41st Street to get to the carrier's mid-block stop instead of making the crossings at intersections.

A spokesman for the Department of Transportation said it will take the Port Authority's input into consideration when deciding whether to renew the license. The department will also go back to Community Board 4 for feedback, he added.

The discount carrier, meanwhile, rejected the Port Authority's notion that the stop is unsafe.

"There have been no safety-related incidents at the site during the three-month trial period," said George Lence, a Megabus spokesman. "We have operated fully within the parameters set by DOT and we look forward to continuing to serve our customers from this popular and convenient stop."

In April, a New York Supreme Court judge threw out a case against the DOT on behalf on a group of bus carriers operating out of the Port Authority Bus Terminal that was seeking an injunction against the stop.

The carriers, including Greyhound, Peter Pan Bus Lines, and Adirondack Transit Lines, argued that the hub gave Megabus all the advantages of a desirable Port Authority location, without the millions of dollars in fees it takes to operate out of the terminal itself.

It seems to me that the old location at Penn Station was unfair to Amtrak.

Different mode, different level of competition. You can make the argument that they are meant for different customer segments.

Mega is literally using the terminal without really using it, and providing a comparable service to people who would consider the carriers inside the terminal.

Especially since the Port used to charge for the area that they are using now. They were adamant that no line buses were to operate from there.

They're actually making a hefty gamble - they already have a large stake inside the Port with Suburban and Shortline, and yet they're doing this.

It's funny what money does to common sense.

Megabus pays us roughly $300/month for usage of one of our bus bays. Does Port Authority charge an insane amount for usage of it's terminal???

Why haven't bus companies moved out of the Port Authority and become curbside operators? Greyhound, Peter Pan, etc. could operate like Megabus or the Chinatown buses.

The New Jersey suburban routes could operate like the MTA express buses with several curbside stops in Manhattan.

1. Space and access
2. The expectation of a terminal area that is centralized
3. Organization and scheduling
4. Direct access to the tunnel for 85% of the carriers

Greyhound used to sit on excess real estate there to keep competitors out. However, it was becoming a millstone around their necks, so they stopped doing it. The GWBBS is a bargain by comparison, but people would have to get used to going that far north for a bus.

Well, yes, but there needs to be better east-west transit in the area to increase the passenger catchment. 181 Street is a mad house and the buses are slow.

If this Port Authority thing doesn't work out, I would *love* to take megabus out of the GWB. Being able to wait in a climate controlled location versus a street corner would make the extra 20 minutes of subway worth it.

I'd like that too, that would cut my commute between the bus station and my house in half. I'm in the Bronx, but with the Bx12 and the (A) I can get to the GWB in 20 minutes on a good day. My house to the Port would be 40 minutes on a good day with the (D) to the (A)/(C).

I don't think too many people take the intercity buses coming from uptown do they?
