You'd think New York State alone would be enough to keep a steady production line going at Oriskany. Seems that every entity in NY buys them.I thought Gillig would go first. Other here have said they are glorified school buses. LIB couldn't wait to get rid of them. |

Gillig is going nowhere. They win small and medium sized agencies bus bids and are always the lowest and more economical builder for those. Alot of universities have Gillig buses as well. NABI won't go anywhere either with LA loving them and putting the 45C back on the production line and orders from Dallas, Puerto Rico, and New Jersey Transit. I feel one of the problems with Orion was their lack of product options with only having the Orion 7 as their sole bus. NovaBus was in the same boat until they started offering the LFS Artic, LFS HEV, and the LFX BRT artic. I too was banking on NYC being Orion's cash cow for large orders for buses but with NYC turning toward NovaBus and New Flyer, that boat had sailed. Also regarding Setra, not too many customers for that market when Prevost, MCI, and Van Hool have dominated the motorcoach market for years. Daimler giving the models to MCI for sale was probably some desperate attempt to get the brand to sell in the US. |

I too thought Gillig would fold 1st; we switched from Orion to Gillig about 8yrs ago and it's been downhill from there. Besides not being good quality buses, they're a maintenance nightmare(which costs in the long run), but our director won't hear it. At this point I'd rather drive a Nova over a Gillig. |

Nova Bus also the advantage of being the sole supplier of buses to agencies in Quebec for many years. New Flyer had essentially the rest of Canada. |

Yep, in this economy, more TAs are simply awarding contracts to the lowest bidder, rather than the most compliant bidder. Gillig is known for bidding lower than its competitors. Orion, on the other hand, generally bids too high to be competitive with Gillig, New Flyer, and Nova. |

I'm just a casual transit fan. BTW, are you with Athens Transit (One of the only GA systems that switch from Orion to Gillig, the other is METRA in Columbus)? Thanks! |
