Aging Kosciuszko Bridge to Be Replaced

Governor Andrew Cuomo announced Tuesday the state will invest nearly a half-billion dollars to repair the Kosciuszko Bridge and 84 miles of roads in the city.

The Kosciuszko Bridge connects Queens and Brooklyn on the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.

It was called the worst in the city by the General Contractors Association a few years ago.

The new bridge will have nine lanes of traffic, three more than it has now.

Construction was slated to begin in 2014 and be completed by 2020, but now construction will be able to begin this fiscal year.

All traffic will be shifted off the exiting viaduct onto the new bridge before 2017.

This accelerated project is part of the governor's "New York Works" program, which aims to create jobs while fixing the state's infrastructure.

The aging Kosciuszko Bridge — which connects Brooklyn to Queens via the BQE — will be replaced to the tune of $460 million, the state announced this week.

The upgrade is part of a $1.2 billion program of accelerated road and bridge repair and is the single biggest project to come from the New York Works infrastructure program signed into law by Governor Andrew Cuomo last week.

Construction on the project is scheduled to begin by next April 1, and the new structure is expected to be ready by 2017. It is one of hundreds of structurally deficient bridges around the state.

New York Works is a so-called infrastructure bank that draws from pooled government and private funding designed to speed up spending on big infrastructure projects.

The program will also coordinate big capital construction projects of 45 agencies and authorities, including the MTA, Port Authority and dozens of others.

It will operate under a 15-member governing board, with 9 members appointed by the governor and six by State Legislature. The initial funding decisions were made before the board has been named.

Looks like the B24 is going to rerouted. The route may be split into two as the design is already pointless. Who uses the Williamburg portion anyway?

Good news. This bridge opened in 1939 before the BQE was even built, and was melded into the BQE in the 1940s. So it's now 73 years old and shows its age. Steep approaches, poor sight lines, and of course very heavy traffic 24/7 all make it notorious. Hopefully the new one will be a big improvement - for the B24 and private cars/trucks.

The new bridge will have no affect on traffic or bus service, unless MTA changes the route.. Lots of land has been acquired. The new briodge and approach will be built aside the old one, then the existing BQE will be joined to the new construction when built. There will be 5 EB lanes and 4 WB lanes, the new bridge will not be as high as the previous one.

Um didn't MTA cut B24 service back in June 2010's cuts? If it actually had worthy usage, then it would've been left alone like the B60, B44, B47, etc.

It should be extended pass Queens Blvd and combined with another route. The B24 design is awful.

sure..they did..but unlike the the 37 the didnt eliminate it completely.
It has its value, and as far as we can see,the MTA knows this is a neighborhood feeder route.

Also, the cuts didnt really have much to do with the routes..if that was the case, other boro's would have been hit just as hard as Brooklyn was..which wasnt the case.
The MTA was looking out for its bottom line, plain and simple..not the riders.

Maybe, but it's better to be safe than sorry, especially with Gold_12TH. He's wrong so often that people must be prevented from believing him. The fact that he pastes so many news stories here might lead people to erroneously believe that he knows what he's talking about, when he actually doesn't. A good example is how today, when I asked him about how he knows that the BQE is beyond the worst Interstate Highway in America, he simply responded with an unwarranted personal attack. He has absolutely no factual or logical basis for much of what he posts here (besides his posts that only contain mindlessly copy and pasted news articles or agency documents).
