Posted by caine515 on Sun Apr 1 19:30:59 2012 I took the B100 today and noticed they were running the New Flyer out there(#506 and #492) but the one i was on the farbox wasnt working. When i asked the driver what the depot said when he called it in he was told "keep it running".I'm assuming that SC has spare buses on a sunday so getting another bus out to him wouldn't be so hard. He had run #002 so wouldn't it make sense to get the other bus to him instead of him running free all day(he said he was out there till 8pm). May have spare buses but possibly no spare operators. Has happened to me.The emphasis was always on providing timely service, not collecting fares. If it is a heavily-used line, it is a real problem for the operator as he/she has to tell each and every passenger boarding in front the box is broken. Some passengers have even tried to give me the fare..... |

The surprise is that run #1002 would be out that late - as a bus that's the second pullout for that route, I would expect it to be relieved by a #104x run before then. (Spring Creek now uses the LGA run numbering system with a few tweaks.) |

Some b/os (from what I saw) would 'print up' a few of those ppr MC transfers and stick it in the MC slot to indicate the machine was broken. |

Some operators CARRY a folded garbage bag in their bags. Easier than trying to find something to cover where the coins go. I've had people remove stuff that I had jamming the coin slot to deposit their fare! Now, I just whip out the bag, and bag it and tag it!STILL LOL@FAREBOX BODY BAGS |

IF they were following protocol, (and that's a BIG if) the bus stays in service until a swap can be arranged. Either a spare operator brings a bus out or his relief pulls out instead of making a road relief. But a bus with a defective farebox should not remain out all day, and the days of taking a bus out of service for that are long gone. |

I hated driving Buses with out a working F/B. You right Joe, I would type a piece of paper over both the coins and Metrocar Slots and people would still try to pay, and for those who were paying with coin then would ask me for a transfer.The problem on this F/B must have been with the MatroCard slot, becouse if it was with the coins the F/B could still be used but he counter would be put into ByPass. Coins would just drop down and not be counted. The B/O is supose to hit a botton deneding on what type of fair was put in. Unless they change the rules since I left in 2000. |

Even if it turns out that it does make the most sense to leave the bus/farebox in revenue service for an extended period of time, at least he'll be informed of the reasons why and he'll be better off because of it. Furthermore, we should not be grateful when the farebox breaks and we get a free ride. Our ride costs money to provide and we should be paying our share. (That said, the transit agency should also be doing its part to provide us with the quality of service it has promised.) If we think we see something that is unnecessarily causing the agency to collect less revenue than it could, then there's no reason not to bring it up. |

Farebox break downs on ST buses are rare, I believe, the last time I recall hearing about a bus having fare box trouble T operator of the bus replaced it.I was on a ST bus that had a broken down fare box once back in the 90's, I got off before it recahed the end of the route, so I don't know if they replaced the bus or if a machanic was sent to try and fix it. |
