Megabus now goes to New Brunswick and Princeton

According to the Megabus site, service begins next week. It's a piggyback on the existing Suburban service.

This is a double edged sword. It's targeted towards students at Princeton and Rutgers going to New York. Ultimately though this may also attract commuters and skim the margins Suburban makes.

Is it a good idea? Yes, but they have to be very, very careful here.

Megabus will price out the commuters. Commuters aren't interested in booking two weeks in advance for EACH trip.

Both stops will be good for college students.

Both Rutgers and Princeton students can get cheap travel to northeast cities via New York.

You could make a case for Bolt and Cherry Hill - many are known to book in advance.

Actually, the bigger issue may involve the Township of East Brunswick - if it's found that through the cross-sell that they take away seats from passengers at Neilsen, that could be grounds for breach of contract.

Won't happen. I don't see the flow affecting rush hour operations.

Hmmm...so they're not really expanding into completely virgin waters....just areas that Coach USA is at in some way or form...I think I'm safe still

Never mind the affect on Suburban Transit's service, I'd be interested in the impact on NJT's Northeast Corridor line. I'm sure Princeton would be a logical market for Megabus to expand into, given that you have to take the "Dinky" to get to the NEC, but New Brunswick might be a little hairy.

It is also good for NJ Transit.

They can reduce human cost (conductors) and some regular passengers can get empty seat from midpoint stations.

There are TOO many student riders from Princeton Junction and New Brunswick, especially Friday afternoon.

The have moved in on a opportunity as Amtrak has all but abandoned New Brunswick, and has skeletal service at PJC, costing 32% of that stations Amtrak loadings when they removed the day time service a few years ago.

Intercity carriers are not the smartest at times. College folk are a lucrative market on Fridays/Sundays and sometimes Thursdays/Mondays. But hey, they're leaving the door wide open for me so I'm not complaining

If NJTR keeps slowing down the average speed of their trains, then the bus could siphon off significant ridership.

I think they saw an opportunity that Amtrak has dissed both New Brunswick and Princeton Jct to get off the local tracks. NJT commuters will not use it, and occasional riders will not be impressed with their fares unless they book way ahead.

Stupid of Amtrak. I did a before / after ridership analysis 3 or 4 years ago when they cut service there 67%. They lost 32% of their loadings, and they did not re-appear at either Metropark nor Trenton. (The earlier discontinuance of the Clockers had nothing to do with it). That is one University market Amtrak doesn't give a shit about. Its Ivy League students are more apt from being out of state than Rutgers ones at New Brunswick.

You're right, take a look at the stats on collegeboard.com. Tons more out of staters at Princeton than at Rutgers.
