Vote urged on proposed NICE Bus cuts

Posted by Gold_12th on Fri Mar 23 10:12:03 2012

Transit advocates Monday called on Nassau County to put up for a vote the planned NICE Bus service changes, which they say are far more severe than the system's operator is letting on.

But officials with Veolia Transportation maintain that more people will benefit than be hurt by the service changes, which take effect April 8.

At a meeting of the legislature Monday, members of the Long Island Bus Riders Union asked lawmakers to call on Veolia to bring its planned service cuts before the county's newly created Transit Advisory Committee and hold a public hearing.

The cuts include increasing wait time on several lines and eliminating midday and weekend service on a few routes with low ridership. Under its contract with the county, Veolia only needs to bring cuts for a vote before the five-member committee if they reduce service on a route by 25 percent or more. The deepest planned cut -- on the N16 -- would reduce service by 24.11 percent, the riders union said.

The group said that the planned cuts also would impact people traveling to medical care and social service centers. And some riders without MetroCards and taking transfers may have to spend an additional $2.25 each way.

NICE Bus chief executive Michael Setzer said the number of people in that situation is "very small," and that Veolia's planned changes will be welcomed by most of its customers. Veolia officials noted that, on the vast majority of routes affected, service is being reduced by 5 percent or less.

Setzer added that, although he has invited the Transit Advisory Committee to review the service changes, he is against straying from Veolia's contract with the county. He said doing so would delay the changes, and increase the size of the system's deficit.

The service changes are meant to fill a $7.3 million gap in NICE Bus' $106 million operating budget. Nassau 's subsidy to the system is $2.5 million.

The "deepest cut" they're referring to is the N16 Short turns between Hempstead and Roosevelt Field. Which is being replaced by the N43 extension to Hempstead. The "Transit Advocates" they're referring to is the "Long Island Bus Riders Union".

I'm sure the N21 is having more than 25% of it's service cut. Glen Cove got a raw deal big time, while Massapequa keeps all of its N80 and N81 buses. I lost quite a bit of respect for Veolia on that. They say they want to reduce the amount of empty buses, but N27s and N21's are rarely empty, whereas 90% of the N80 and N81s have 5 people or less on them. Its a major BS alert. I've had little luck bring this issue to attention of the media, and it seems the Bus Riders Union didn't bring it up either, despite my telling them. How deep are the pockets of Peter Schmitt to pay off all these ppl to be quiet?

Have you written to NICE to ask their rationale for these decisions? They seem to be pretty good at responding to inquiries.

Someone on nyct forums asked at the community meeting. They said they had "problems " trying to adjust the N80/N81

The "Long Island Bus Riders Union" doesn't care about equal or warranted cuts. They just want to cause a stir about any service changes or reduction in service levels regardless of what they are or how much sense it makes to implement them. Because, u know.... They're "transit advocates ".

NICE probably would have increased headways like they did on the 73/74, seems like they want to use the elimination of routes as a last resort.

I hear the term "Bus Riders Union" and I think of those loons in LA who basically bullied LACMTA into a consent decree. Which is to say this group in Nassau doesn't strike me as overly credible.

I'm unfamiliar with what happened in LA, can you elaborate?

The Nassau group doesn't strike me as overly credible either. Maybe they're just trying to get exposure.

They basically said that rail expansion was racist because it took funds away from the bus system (used by the poor) to give rail to the wealthy.

I'm not sure what ended up happening, though.
