AC Transit decides to buy new buses from Hayward company

The AC Transit board agreed Wednesday to buy 40 new buses from the Gillig bus manufacturer in Hayward in the transit sytem's first major vehicle order since adopting a "buy America" policy for new vehicles.

AC Transit will pay an estimated $348,162 per vehicle, making the order roughly $15.2 million, district spokesman Clarence Johnson said. AC Transit has received a state commitment to supply $8.2 million of the money.

The vote was 6-1 to authorize district managers to negotiate the purchase from Gillig. The no vote was cast by Director Jeff Davis.

AC Transit had been buying many of its buses from the Van Hool company of Belgium, but the board in 2009 adopted a "buy America" policy aimed at getting buses from domestic manufacturers.

Some bus riders complained the Van Hool seat and floor design increased the risk of slips and falls. AC had design changes made to reduce that risk.

AC Transit carries some 200,000 passengers a day in 13 cities in western Alameda and Contra Costa counties.

About time, I am tired of looking at these ugly vanhools everyday. The order is for (65) 40ft Gillig Advantage with Cummins ISL and Allison B400 tranny. When these are on AC Transit's property, they will be the only Gilligs in the fleet again since the 2002/2004 Gillig Phantoms were transferred to MV Transportation for the DB Express Lines in December 2011. This would be the first ACT hasn't had a Gillig in their fleet since they first got them in 1982(1982-2011).

Gillig which is in Hayward, CA is two cities away from AC's headquarters in Oakland, Ca. While Vanhool is tens of thousands of miles away, the delivery cost alone is too costly and takes days than Gillig's delivery time of about 30 minutes.

Their Gillig Low Floor/Gillig BRTs have had very high success in the past. Previous TAs that have never owned any GILLIGs now have them in their fleet. Looking at how many TAs have them now I think the Low Floor/BRTs may have outnumbered the amount of TAs the Phantom had. Even Disney Transport has them along with buses from NovaBus.

I like Gillig Buses and they are great buses. Where i work for HART in Tampa,Florida we have 177 low floor Gillig Buses and we will be getting 18 BRT Gillig Buses by the end of this year.

Lynx has 194 Gillig BRTs, 5 Gillig Low Floors, 2 NABI artics, and 71 Phantoms buses on out fleet. We are expected to get several more 40 foot BRTs plus four more NABI artic buses this year. The Low Floor buses are very successful around here including the hybrids. However I really do miss the Phantom buses with DD50 engines we received in the 1990s along with the ones with Cummins M11 engines although we have three with Cummins M11 engines left. I miss the 1994-1996 200 series Phantoms the most since they had DD50 engines and Allison B500 transmission.

About time---why it took so long for AC Transit to consider a company that's in its service area is beyond me. The delivery charge could essentially be none, as AC Transit drivers could pick them up from the factory.

$348,162 per bus appears to be a bargain, however.

You're all forgetting one thing: Rick Fernandez is no longer in the picture, he resigned a while ago, "to spend more time with his family"
which actually means "The Board of AC Transit is letting me resign immediately or I'll get indicted for making a deal with Van Hool"

Yes, NABI was included.

The current procurement is based on available options from other agencies - the Gillig order will piggyback off a procurement from Lynx in Orlando FL.

Ah - so I guess these will be BRTs, which makes sense as they will fit in well with the rest of the fleet. What will these new Gilligs replace?

They will not necessarily be BRT's - Gillig usually quotes the standard Low Floor model with the BRT package as an option. Syracuse's Centro purchased three 30-foot Low Floor buses from a Connecticut option and decided to get the BRT package even though the original order was straight LF's.

When you look at how many transit systems (mostly small ones) buy Gilligs - and I'd conservatively guess about a couple hundred, then you can see how their sales are pretty high.

I wouldn't be surprised if the proximity of the Gillig plant in Heyward to AC Transit's base of operations held the final cost down as you're transport expenses could practically be nil.

The final price of the AC Transit Gilligs is actually in the area of $425,000 per bus. The price quoted in the article was a base price which is often done to make the deal sound more attractive than it already is.

I've heard from several sources that this order will knock out the remainder of the NABI 416s operating for the district.

Yep. The 3000/3100s are done once the Gillig order is in service. There is only about 100 NABI High Floors left in service from the original 204 and they are retiring buses daily from the fleet basically. They are 14 years old and will be 15 years once the Gilligs arrive. I love the NABI HFs and will miss them when they are all gone. RIP 1997-2013. The NABIs at one point from 1997 to 2008/9 were the biggest in the fleet from 265 to 185 or so, then the vanhools took over with about 304 buses. Atleast the Gilligs are coming back to ACT.
