There was more leverage when the bus route was operated by Queens Surface, a company whose operations were subject to the political winds of the administration and the Council. Now that it is operated by a division of the MTA, there is much less likelihood of the service being re-structured to meet the demands of taxpayers. Perhaps after King Bloomberg is finally ousted from office, and if a financially-responsible person takes his place, the new mayor will follow in the steps of Edward Mangano and take back the transit system from the MTA. |

Under current law, Bloomberg cannot run for another term, and unless he tries another tactic to remain in office, he will be ousted after his successor is elected next year. |

But the word "ousted" also conveys the secondary meanings of getting someone out who has been in place too long, and of showing disapproval of the person's policies. And using such powerful or emotionally-charged words exhibits one's conviction as to those secondary meanings. To wit:Bloomberg has been in office too long, as mayors are limited by law to two terms yet Bloomberg arranged to have the law suspended sufficiently for him to take three terms. Bloomberg has also implemented bad policy with respect to public transportation, taking a system of privately-operated bus service for which the mayor was directly accountable to the electorate, and then turning over its operation to the MTA, thereby shielding himself from direct accountability and increasing the taxpayer cost for its operation. Those who disagree politically with these perceptions would probably have preferred a word that reflects Bloomberg's "retirement"! |
