Residents who depend on public transportation to travel Hylan Boulevard can weigh in about an improvement project at a public meeting Wednesday.

MTA/New York City Transit and the New York City Department of Transportation will hold an open house to give an update on its S79 Select Bus Service project. Residents will have a chance to hear about the project, its operation, and its proposed bus stop locations.

The proposed 17-mile SBS route would run from the Staten Island Mall along Richmond Avenue and continue along Hylan and across the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge to Bay Ridge, where it would terminate at the 86th Street subway station of the R line to Manhattan.

People at the open house will be able to view the proposed plan for the Hylan Boulevard corridor, and talk with project team members. They will be invited to share their concerns about transit service, traffic conditions, pedestrian safety and curb use on Hylan.

The open house will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at the Renaissance, Grant City. The formal presentation starts at 7:15 p.m.
More project information can be found online at www.nyc.gov/brt.

The project was undertaken to try to improve local and express bus travel time and reliability, improve traffic flow at congested intersections, and improve safety for all corridor users, including motorists, transit riders, and pedestrians.

After months of studying traffic and transit ridership, the plan is expected to be implement by 2013.

The proposed plan is scaled down from the absurd original plan which would have required a major reconstruction of Hylan along with the elimination of parking spots in business corridors.

Basically some the peak-direction No Standing zones will be made Bus Only lanes, which is what they really are now.

Can't say no to extra service, so why not I can't wait to see the SBS S79 come to staten island. I wonder if this will mean 24/7 S79 service. Since Yukon closes after a certain time, the MTA could use buses from Charleston. And they should also run the S44, S61 & S59 later in to the night using castleton buses.

If that were the case, the S79 would have to run local at night. It would be stupid to have buses skipping stops when they're spaced every hour apart.

And the only thing I see the need for is a bus down Richmond Avenue. I've seen the last few northbound S59s of the night, and they can carry a decent load (maybe 10 people on the bus as it passes by, which isn't bad for that time. Obviously during the day it would be a different story)

The problem is that the bus would probably have to serve St. George to get decent ridership. Oh well, then in that case, make the S44 a 24/7 route. The S79 covers the southern part of Richmond Avenue and the S44 covers the northern part.

Yukon has the S62 now - it doesn't close.
