QM20 Wall Street (Re: Volunteers wanted to assist us!) |

Posted by Gotham Bus Co. on Tue Feb 28 19:56:02 2012, in response to Volunteers wanted to assist us!, posted by Bounad Hanhic on Mon Feb 27 10:40:04 2012. [We are currently working in Northeast Queens on efforts to bring Lower Manhattan service on the QM20 Express Bus.] Just to play "Devil's Advocate" for a minute... - Do you have some measure of the actual demand for Wall Street trips? - If there were sufficient demand for Bayside-to-Wall-Street service, wouldn't it already have manifested itself on the busier QM2? - Have you asked MTA Bus Company for MetroCard data showing transfers from the subway (Lower Manhattan stations) to the QM20, or from the BxM18 to the QM20? |

I think the flyering will help to determine if Downtown customers are using the QM20 now. It is possible that those customers are already taking the QM2, but would prefer the QM20. I think that the idea that the MTA would be able to measure demand for new service through existing data is logical, but is not always the case. For example, there is demand for express bus service from the Rockaways to Lower Manhattan, but there has to be a critical mass of service (2 round trips per day minimum) for enough ridership to be attracted to it. |

Out of curiousty if there is a demand for a QM 20 to Wall St? How would MTA justify the cost? The way I see it I would either utilized the low used QM 3 or eliminate the QM 3 and use those runs as Downtown runs...Also in the case of Lower Manhattan - Rockaways service, when you say "critical mass of service", would MTA being judging this by the current ridership levels of the QM 16 and QM 17? To be honest with the MTA taking a gamble on the possible grown in Arverne by rerouting the Q 21 and adding a limited, I would feel they should do the same with a BM6 route by having an express route from Arverne to Lower Manhattan. Justfiy the cost by eliminating the BM 1 or BM 3 (or both routes) Lower Manhattan service and replacing it with a BM 6. |

[Out of curiousty if there is a demand for a QM 20 to Wall St? How would MTA justify the cost?] That was why I pointed out the BxM18 transfer privilege. It functions as a cheap-to-operate Lower Manhattan "extension" for the Queens express routes that have some demand for it but not enough to warrant dedicated trips. |

[I think the flyering will help to determine if Downtown customers are using the QM20 now.] The flyering will definitely determine the number of people who CLAIM to want Downtown service. Back in 1991, the Transportation Research Board published a paper ("Relationship Between Surveyed Behavioral Intent and Actual Behavior", http://pubsindex.trb.org/view.aspx?id=359624) summarizing a survey of college students in Miami as to their projected use of the MetroRail system. All of the "No" and "Maybe" respondents ended up not riding (no surprise there). In addition, about 75% of the "Yes" respondents ended up not riding. (They had answered "Yes" only because they thought it was what the researchers wanted to hear.) |

We did an informal observation on the BxM18 transfer privelege and we found that almost no one from ANY Queens express bus made the transfer to the BxM18. But, still if you ride a QM2 or a QM20 you will see about half the bus empty out at 34th Street and Park Avenue and 6th Avenue and 35th Street for the Subway to go Downtown. |

Downtown Rockaway folks would be lost in the data with the Q35 and 2 train. You would have some PM peak data with the boarding station and transfers to the Q35. Is Gotham volunteering to get that data? :) |

They could just hire a private bus company to do it. If the MTA's position is to provide as little service as possible, then that would be the obvious solution. |

If a private bus company was hired to run the service, TWU would probably put up a huge fight over it as the QM20 is one of the more desirable express bus route to work at College Point. |
