A woman crossing one of the city’s most dangerous intersections in Queens died after getting struck by an MTA bus this morning, authorities said.

The driver of the Q44 bus sped off after the accident on Northern Boulevard, not realizing she had just hit the woman at 8:15 a.m., transit officials said.

The victim apparently darted into the busy boulevard as she tried to flag down a bus on Union Street. She was pronounced dead at the scene.

“The woman was running across the street, waving to I think, get a bus," a witness said.

"[She] really hit her hard. She was just unconscious.”
Transit authorities later tracked down the bus and are still questioning the operator.

That intersection had 92 pedestrian and car crashes between 1995-2009, according to CrashStat.org.

Police are still investigating.

Cops are trying to find a city bus that allegedly struck and killed a woman in Queens Wednesday, officials said.

The woman, believed to be in her 40s, was hit on Northern Blvd. near Union St. in Flushing shortly after 8 a.m., cops said.

She died at the scene.

Police sources said investigators are still interviewing several witnesses, who are giving conflicting reports as to whether it was a bus or a car that hit the woman.

“A customer got on a bus and told the driver she saw a bus hit a woman,” said MTA spokeswoman Deirdre Parker.

“We have to figure out, if it was one of our buses, which one it was,” she said, adding that the driver may have been unaware that the woman was hit.

Are buses today too large and too well-insulated that these types of "unnoticed" collisions continue to occur with regularity? Or is it simply bus driver inattention that causes the collision without notice? In other words, do we need better buses or better bus drivers?

(In some cases there was carelessness by the dead person, but certainly a death sentence for pedestrian carelessness should be avoided if at all possible.)

Remarkable about many accident stories in the tabloid press is the lack of specifics. Was the bus turning a corner? Was it going south to west? Or east to north?
---
The loss of life is tragic. However, as a pedestrian, I find most threats are from turning vehicles that have the same green that I have. To explain, if I am crossing Northern Blvd south at a signal and await the green light, a vehicle coming south on Union but turning west onto Northern must yield. More often in the five boroughs the driver yields. Here in Nassau County, the driver is surprised to see a walker!

Actually, this is an issue with the pedestrian traffic in the downtown Flushing area. I have driven in that area many a times and pedestrians are rather careless and take many risks when crossing the street. The intersection at Union Street and Northern Blvd was recently updated to restrict the flow of traffic through there. Also, the intersection at Main Street and Northern Blvd. as well....for the same reason...to restrict the flow of traffic.

"Here in Nassau County, the driver is surprised to see a walker!"

Yes...you are SO RIGHT ON THE MONEY about that fact of life! In the 5 boros, especially in Manhattan, traffic does yield the pedestrians crossing at the intersection when making turns. But I notice alot, in Nassau County don't particularly care to yield to pedestrians as if they are invisible or they expect them to walk quicker so the motorist can get through quicker at the intersection.

VIDEO: NY1 news

A woman was killed Wednesday morning after being struck by a Metropolitan Transportation Authority bus in Queens.

The New York City Police Department says the Q44 bus was traveling westbound on Northern Boulevard in Flushing around 8:15 a.m. when the driver struck the woman as the bus turned onto Union Street.

The woman, who is said to be in her 40s, was pronounced dead at the scene.

Her name has not been released.

According to the MTA, the bus operator did not stop because he was unaware of the accident.

"I came outside after the accident, and I saw the, the woman she was dead," said one witness at the scene.

"The driving is excessive. You know the speeds that they drive here is unbelievable and I witness it all the time, accidents, every day," said another witness.

The bus was not in service at the time of the incident.

An investigation is ongoing.

But do careless pedestrians deserve to be killed? If not, how do we reduce the number of incidents where bus drivers are unaware that they've hit and then killed pedestrians? Is it inevitable that, as the price for having a transit bus system, careless pedestrians will be hit and killed by bus drivers?

From viewing the picture on NY1 website, it looks like the bus was on Union Street and made a right turn onto Northern Blvd to go westbound. That would make more sense from the picture.

"But do careless pedestrians deserve to be killed?"

No onr deserves to be killed...but if the pedestrians cross the street in a RECKLESSS mannner.....then they are asking for trouble. Same deal as a passenger running for a train and gets hit at a crossing gate because he/she goes around the gate to catch the train. Does that person deserve to die too? no....but if you are reckless....then it will happen.

"Is it inevitable that, as the price for having a transit bus system, careless pedestrians will be hit and killed by bus drivers?"

Why blame it on buses? she could have been killed by a car or even someone on a bike. Makes no difference...if you are reckless...you pay a price for it....with your life.

Aside from this tragedy...This bus OPERATOR will have to work the rest of his career in the YARD. If he goes on the road he will have biggies harassing him every trip.

I can't believe that! that they would do that to an employee....especially if the person ran into the street without looking to see what was there. If you ever spend some time in downtown Flushing....you'd know how reckless people are when it comes to walking around and crossing the street. They really don't care if they get run over.

I don't see how the MTA can find this as a preventable accident.
She was on her cell phone and crossing the intersection diagonally.
This is her facebook.

A woman chatting on her cell phone was hit and killed by a city bus as she crossed one of the most dangerous Queens intersections Wednesday, cops and advocates said.

Meilan Jin, 22, was crossing diagonally across Northern Blvd. and Union St. in Flushing shortly after 8 a.m., when the bus made a wide right turn and struck her, cops and witnesses said.

“The bus was coming pretty fast,” said witness Fahad Ghulam, 54.

The bus drove away from the injured woman, who died at the scene.

Investigators later found the bus they believed to be responsible for the crash: a Q44 bus that was out of service at the time, officials said. They questioned the female driver, who was apparently unaware that she hit the woman, officials said.

Michael Murphy, spokesman for Transportation Alternatives, said the intersection is one of the most dangerous in the borough, with 92 crashes involving pedestrians between 1995 and 2009.

“It’s indicative of a definite problem there,” Murphy said.

But the city Department of Transportation says the number of accidents at the juncture are going down after a number of safety upgrades.

The last pedestrian fatality at the intersection was in 2008, according to DOT records. Statistics show that nine pedestrians were injured in accidents between Aug. 2010 and June of last year, which was down from the average of 11 in the previous three years.

[ UPDATE #3 ] Woman struck & killed by ''Q44'' bus / {female B/O not charged}

A 22-year-old Queens woman was mowed down by a city bus yesterday at a notorious Flushing intersection that’s been ranked among the most dangerous in the city.

Meilan Jin was killed at Northern Boulevard and Union Street when an out-of-service Q44 bus hit her while making a wide right turn at around 8:15 a.m. — and kept going.

An MTA spokesman said the driver, whom a source identified as a woman, was “apparently unaware” that someone had been struck as the bus turned onto Northern Boulevard.

Jin’s roommate, who declined to give her name, said her friend was likely on her way to catch a van to her job at a Westchester nail salon when she got hit.

“She was very honest, always happy,” the woman said. “She worked hard and tried to save some money.”

A Flushing HS student aboard another Q44 bus at the time of the accident said Jin was running when she was smacked by the bus.

“It really hit her hard,” the student said in tears. “She was unconscious, just dead.”

Between 1995 and 2009, 92 accidents involving pedestrians occurred at the infamous crossroads, said Michael Murphy, a spokesman for the advocacy group Transportation Alternatives.

“It’s a notoriously high-crash intersection for pedestrians,” Murphy said.

The driver, who has been on the job more than a decade, is not expected to be charged.

IINM, the MTA's policy on accidents is identical to FDNY's: the ONLY "non-preventable accident" is getting struck squarely in the rear by another vehicle. EVERYTHING else is "chargeable". In this case, the MTA will find that the B/O didn't use the set of eyes in the back of her head that all B/O's are issued at hiring...

But seriously, this poor woman will be fighting for her job.
