Valley Metro Fares and Update

Posted by phoenixtransitbus on Wed Feb 22 01:03:33 2012

Valley Metro is planning to raise their fares due to the bad economy.

Also, they are planning to eliminate Express Route 581- North Mountain Express due to low ridership.

Now Route 72- Scottsdale/Rural is running New Flyer D60LFR all the times on weekdays.

It used to run NABI 35-LFW buses on this route.

Raising fares for crapping ass service pretty sad. These people need to fight back

Wow, was there a severe increase in ridership? I remember the buses were somewhat uncomfortably full, but not to the point of needing artics. Of course, this was 2 years ago during the summer anyway...

I found this article from ABC15 about the fare increase. This was posted back in November, though. Has anything changed since then?

MESA, AZ - Valley Metro is proposing a transit fare increase by July 2012 in response to the growing cost of operating its bus and light rail services.

The East Valley Tribune reports the agency is looking to boost the $1.75 one-ride fare to $2 and increase all-day passes from $3.50 to $4.

The cost of a 31-day pass would go from $55 to $64, with express 31-day passes changing from $85 to $96.

Valley Metro wants to collect at least 25 percent of its operational costs through fares, but that share has fallen to 23 percent.

The American Public Transit Association says the fare hike is similar to what many other transit agencies have done.

Valley Metro's board of directors will make a decision on fares in the spring.

Geez, the last time I rode the 72 Scottsdale/Rural, they were using C40LFRs and occasionally NABI 40-LFW CNGs...

Oh wait, I misread the original post as the 77! lol

When I was there in 2009, I basically saw the C40LFRs and NABI 40LFW LNGs as well.

If I remember correctly, putting artics on the line was on the agenda for quite some time. I never rode the 72 though.

Near my college they are running 2007 New Flyer D60LF on Route 59- 59th Avenu if the D40LF or NABI 40-LFW broke down.

In 2003 it used to run 35xx series TMC RTS buses if the 40xx series New Flyer broke down.

My recollection was that when the bus assignments changed a few years back on the 72, there were some occasional 35-footers mixed in with a mostly 40-foot fleet. Also, keep in mind that daytime headways were cut from every 15 minutes to every 20 minutes a few years back, and that may be why artics are now used on this route.

I ride 59 3-4 times a week, Worst Transit does not know how to use the artics they have. they have been known to use the D60LF as a replacement bus for breakdowns for short distances on 43, 59 & 67. (for example 2 weeks ago on 67 a D40lf broke down on NB 67 At Glendale and replaced by a D60LF for the remainder of the trip with either a D40LF or a NABI waiting at Arrowhead. they should keep the D60LF for the remainder of the run or day.

Well, I remember when it was 1994 D40LF. Then MV took over the contract and the Phoenix operation moved to Mesa, and some of the CNG-powered NABIs moved in. Then RPTA acquired the first 52 C40LFRs which pretty much replaced the older D40LF. Then the Tempe garage took over the route, which meant putting LNG NABIs on (along with a few RPTA C40LFRs). Yes, one would infrequently see a 35-LFW, but it was mostly ex-FLASH (40-LFW) buses. Now, Tempe has L40LFR, C40LFR, and DE60LFR, which pretty much has banished the NABIs to the local routes.

The fares are going up because the farebox recovery has slipped below 25%. There are many who believe that public transit should should be 100% farebox (remember those days?). Imagine what the fare would be if we knocked that penny off the sales tax.

MV took a few routes they didn't take over all of it they took routes 61 45 540 541 531 532 533 , and they split the red line during the week and ran it on the weekends and the east valley routes then they lost there contract due to not keeping the buses up poor ac lots of break downs.I knw this cuz some of my freinds wrked for phx had to go and fill in for them due to call in's etc.

I recall that 45 and 61 was still Tempe at the time MV picked up the RPTA contract. The Valley Coach (Veolia) buses were staged out of a lot on S 44th St - MV took over the contract in two stages. At the end, the 44th St operation was closed. Pretty much everything east of 48th St. was RPTA (MV). MV had to bring in some Foothill Transit Phantoms as spares. It was after the contract was turned back over to Veolia that 72 & 81 were traded for 45 & 61.

I can't remember exactly the deal with the Express runs...RPTA used to contract with Phoenix Transit, and they were using MAN articulateds. When the NABI compos arrived, they could not be used on non-Phoenix routes, so the RPTA express routes had to use its own equipment.

I haven't seen many of the NABI 40-LFW CNGs recently (on the RPTA routes). Between the service cuts and all of the new C40LFRs, I believe most of these buses are in their final days. The RPTA may be on it's way to being almost 100% New Flyer (Save the 2006 NABI 60BRTs).

RPTA only had a handful (and 6157-6163 have looked pretty sorry for some time), and all had moved over to the Tempe garage when it took over 72/81. And you're right, even in Tempe the only NABIs I see are the Tempe-owned units which were rehabbed.

I also knw there changed out the tranny of 7156 and 6377 to a Allison B-500R WTEC From a Allison B-400R.and the rehab they did wasn't a full one. Usually a Rehab is done with new motor or rebuilt motor seats windows everything like the Mta did with 8000-8566 with 8154 as the exception. I knw 6315 received a new motor a year ago.

Valley Metro Bus Strike in Phoenix and Tempe

Posted by phoenixtransitbus on Fri Mar 9 14:57:50 2012, in response to Re: Valley Metro Fares and Update, posted by phoenixtransitbus on Fri Mar 9 14:50:38 2012.

I heard from Phoenix bus driver that they want Veolia Transportation out of town. The reason is unfair labor practices.

The negotiations with Veolia is not going well.

I hope ATU Local 1433 and Veolia will reach a agreement to avoid a bus strike.

They never seem to run the artics on the routes that they should. IMHO, the Phoenix artics should be dedicated to the: 3, 17, 29, 41, and 70 for E/W routes and the 16, 7, 0, 8, and 19 for N/S routes. The other routes can use 40 footers.

As far as Tempe/RPTA the 45, 61, and 72 should be dedicated artic routes.
