I m glad I got to start riding buses in the 90s back then without Metrocard Gold or unlimited Metrocard, it really did suck to get around anywhere. Wow. |

I talk to today's teens (born in the 90s) who complain about getting around and transferring, telling them how you used to have to get a paper transfer and it was only good if you were standing at a certain intersection to make the transfer. . .and no transfer to the subway. . .they don't realize how good they have it. |

And the B8 had a terminal at Bay 7th Street & Bath Avenue, the R7 (S53) used 94 Street to get to 4th Avenue, the B63 & B37 used 99 Street because that's where the trolleys ran years before, etc, etc. |

I remember the paper transfer when I started to take the bus during the late 80s early 90s. The bus operator would not accept a transfer that was not accept a transfer if it is not the right spot and direction that was stated on the ticket. Today you can be 5 stops from the intersecting stop and the transfer is valid (Thou in my mind I still always worry if an operator would say no when I am not at the correct transfer location). |

That stop would eventually become the B 8 extension (now currently the night B8 service). People back then were glad when the B 8 was extended to Bay Ridge. I am surprise back then that post 9 - 11 routing of B8 (via Victory Hospital) and only via Ft. Hamilton Base was consindered for the extension. I know the extension was made to provide connections to the S53 especially for College of SI students (my mom was one of them) but does anyone know how the routing came to be? Also I notice how times have changed, the B 8 gets cut for the wrong reasons, it seems like we went back in time to the Pre - Bay Ridge days (except nights). I still think the B8 should operate weekdays to Bay Ridge, late night service so far doesn't make sense. |

I could be wrong but isn't that B 36, what was called later the B 36S? From the looks of that map the B 36 and the other B 36 (seagate) don't touch each other. I remember the B 36S was exclusive route for Seagate. |

I did recall that B 36 was a special route. How did that route work? Was it run by the MTA and was it an RTS or fishbowl type buses operating the route? And when was it shut down? I assume the reason for the shutdown was because of the weight limit and purpose of the bus. |

I just realized was the 90s the best period, Metrocard Gold period or Unlimited Metrocard period, to be riding MTA bus system, especially in Brooklyn. If you really look at the recent service compeare to after 90s cuts, We had the best frequent service and system then what we got now. Our current system seems to take us backwards here in Brooklyn. |

In fact, you can be anywhere, as long as you are changing routes! (Some exceptions as we all know, mainly in Manhattan and Bronx).I used to take a Queens bus to the LIRR to a Brooklyn bus and of course used the transfer. On the weekends with CityTicket it was a nice trick for getting from eastern Queens to the center of Brooklyn fast and relatively cheap. |

It was shut down because the MTA didn't want to provide a public service on private streets where the public was not allowed to ride the bus. They may have asked Sea Gate to pay prior to shutting it down just like Sea Gate pays for sanitation and police. |

Before the changes I remember B21 passengers boarding at Kingsborough Community College (who lived in Coney Island) with a KCC ID card were able to request a special (orange) transfer to the B36 bus. What was that all about? The regular transfer ticket didn't include a transfer between the B36 and B21 routes? |

There were about I've locations where KCC were given special added transfers which I believe allowed them to attend KCC for one or two fares maximum even for those using five buses to get there from Staten Island. If I remember correctly my O/D survey picked up 8 students doing that and each response represented about 20 respondents or 160 students daily using 4 or 5 buses each way.And I believe tyne transfers were pink not orange. Orange was the normal north and west color in Brooklyn or the inbound toward Manhattan direction. |

As time passes with the 2010 cuts, I noticing more and more complaints but not just in service but frequencies of service.I have many concerns regarding the B 44, which you have mention in your article. I strongly think before any SBS service is implemented on the route, to make any restructuring changes on the B 43, B 48, and B 49 ASAP. The Franklin Shuttle is expected to be shut down again for rehab, so that means either a shuttle bus or B 48 extension may be needed. The B 48 should replace the B 49 along Franklin/Bedford Av. Terminate it at Foster/Flatbush Avs The B 49 then can run via Ocean Av and terminate at Crown Heights - Utica Av The B 43 should be restructured to continue on Brooklyn/Kingston Avs to serve KCH, and run via New York Av to the Junction (replacing the B 44) This now leaves the B44 serving Rogers/Nostrand Av |

At the time I paid two fares to get there by subway and than bus or cab from the Brighton Station. Sometimes I took the B12 route and got an Add-A-Ride to the B49 route which was a little cheaper than the double fare but a longer trip. |

That makes sense except that NY Avenue would still service that is even less frequent than today (the B43 runs less frequently than the B44 local, I believe). If I haven't mentioned it before, I think that one way to add extra service would be to run a second service down NY/Brooklyn Avenue that would travel between Fulton Street and somewhere in the Bergen Beach area. After serving NY/Brooklyn Avenue, it would go over to The Junction and then go down Avenue J to Ralph Avenue, possibly going further into Bergen Beach afterwards. |

That what bothers me so much with MTA responses. They say they can't have the B49 continue along Ocean because it is only one block from Flatbush when the same is true now. Bedford is also one block from Flatbush. But they have no problem with the B49 and SBS on the same street. |

If anything SBS B 44 without the proper transit changes to the nearby routes is already sending red flags...I really believe the DOT and MTA don't understand the complexity of the B 44 route and this project would change the way people travel. This SBS route impacts several bus routes. I m just talking about Flatbush area, but I can imagine the impact in Sheepshed Bay. |

Look how difficult it was to get from Borough Park to Midwood when the B11 ended at 18th Avenue. Several years ago I read somewhere that there were plans to extend it back in the late 30s but it wasn't because of World War II. I had not known that when I proposed it in 1975. |

But a change like that will never happen when you only study one or two routes at a time and refuse to invest in the system by adding a few extra miles of service to fill service gaps. |
