Buses hit new 'low' - $45M buys cramped ceilings, legroom



This bus comes up short.

The MTA's newest buses have New Yorkers scratching their heads at the numskull design, where riders 5-foot-2 or taller can easily hit their noggins on the low roofs.

The Nova Diesel Standards are 61.5 inches high at their lowest point along the rear windows, as compared to 69 inches in the Nova RTS buses dating from the late 1990s.

The older models don't have interior steps leading to the back section in the rear.

"They made this bus wrong. It's a waste of my money," said Garvin Peters, 31, while riding a new bus on the B6 line in southern Brooklyn.

A group of eight seats in the back are also dramatically short on legroom, with 15 inches of space total. Passengers sit facing each other in these intimate quarters, leaving 7.5 inches of space per person. The old RTS buses gave 10 inches of space for riders.

The strange setup forces the long-legged to sprawl themselves into the aisle, The Post observed during a recent ride.

"These buses are made for a 98-pound woman who is 5 feet tall. The MTA should have taken some riders with them to test them before buying them," a union source said.

The new Nova buses have 34 seats, whereas the older models averaged around 40. Overall, NYC Transit has about 4,600 buses split among the Nova, Daimler, Motor Coach and New Flyer manufacturers.

The first crop of the new 90 buses made in upstate Plattsburgh started hitting city streets this month, mostly in Brooklyn. Nova will send the final shipment next month. The diesels cost taxpayers $45.3 million, and will eventually be used throughout the system, according to MTA documents.

The MTA is experimenting with a few models of the bus before buying any more, a Nova spokeswoman said.

MTA spokeswoman Deirdre Parker said that the reduced headroom is necessary to accommodate power and suspension systems. The buses are lower to the ground, making boarding quicker and eliminating the temperamental wheelchair lifts used in the older buses, she said.

The bus also has one clear advantage for now -- a neutral new-car smell.

The legroom and headroom is fine in the LFS artic model. But the MTA spec LFS 40 footer model, they forgot to do some researching.

The only thing they have similar issues is the lack of seats, the rear door issue and plus the a/c is weak.

Both have the same ceiling height. However, the LFSA/LFX has a lot more high headroom.

They DID test these buses last year back in the Spring so this "union source" obviously don't know what they're talking about.

I think what the source meant was for the riders to give feedback, which I haven't heard much of with demos.

Well on Staten Island they seem to be running the LFS fleet mainly on the lesser-used routes/runs, so that's why the Staten Island Advance didn't address this first but it's definitely a problem that needs to be fixed.

I'm glad Castleton got them, the LFS's wouldn't survive over here. Would have been a disaster for the Q58.

A hope the New Flyer model has a better seating arrangement.

The B6 is a much busier route than the Q58. If they work on the B6, they'll work on the Q58.

The B6 has is longer and has more buses. Also the streets are wider and traffic is not as bad making the buses more spread out. The Q58 is notorious for bunching due to traffic delays, and constantly deals with standing crowds because of it.

I haven;t been on the LFS yet. I know Q58 riders have gotten use to the standing room of the OrionVII OG, and usually utilize the back standing as well. Low Floors are new to B6 riders, but how is the standing room?

Its the TRUTH and for some reason it really pisses you off that I state it so clearly!. The MTA conducted a study on passenger preferences with respect to bus seating capacity and then disregarded it when placing an order. There are several models of this bus which all comply with federal ADA regulations yet the MTA chose the LEAST COMFORTABLE one, thereby demonstrating their utter contempt for the passenger. It is a government monopoly - its motto should be: "The Public Be Damned"!

But the legroom issues were with the high floor section, I thought. I sat in that "conference" area on the M15 SBS and felt no discomfort whatsoever, and could even stretch my long legs out since there was nobody directly in front of me (I rode backwards). The man pictured barely has room for his knees.

I see what you mean...I'm just wondering why this is the case. Maybe I'll understand when I ride the 40 footers, but I thought they would have very similar specifications where there wouldn't be such an obvious difference in leg room.

Wait...how so? Just skimming through the study, they seem to be following the preferences to a T, with two level low floor buses and 2x1 seating on the low floor section with 2x2 seating on the upper section.

Not trying to pwn anyone, just trying to make sense out of the whole thing...

Customers reacted very favorably to low floor bus designs with 37 or more seats (compared to 40 in NYC Transit's current buses). Low floor buses with significantly fewer seats got generally unfavorable ratings.

The MTA buses have LESS than 37 seats and even some of those seats are unusable by many people, due to the lack of leg room as shown in the pictures in this thread. Customer preference and COMFORT was definitely NOT given priority by the MTA
