I'd agree that it does look a bit odd, but WMATA buses were a bit plain with the all grey front end.

What those 148 will replace might make a good debate. The 4200-series Orion V's are getting up there in age (1997-98 vintage) but are in better shape than the newer (2000-01) 2100-series, but at the same time WMATA has a block Orion VI's that have had scores of problems that hit the magic age of 12 next year.

My guess and the ideal result: The current ready reserve fleet (Flxs/436s) gone, the worst 4200's gone, the Orion VI's and some 2100's go into ready reserve. The ideal replacement for the 4200's would be an order of artics to try to add capacity on key routes while maintaining current headways since the step-up from a 40' high floor to a 60' low floor isn't that much.

With what money? Are those new artics going to be used for a late night bustitution?

Hmm, I wouldn't be surprised to (sadly) see the Orion VIs go before the 4200s. After all, WMATA has done this before, replacing newer buses before older ones, with the 9600s.

I do agree with your synopsis of what the buses could replace (if they aren't used for expansion...I guess I won't see them running on the K9...:P ). There's no point in keeping an obsolete fleet in ready reserve status (although I love WMATA dearly for keeping my beloved Flxes this long), but I'd imagine the 2100s wouldn't end up in ready reserve at such a young age...if anything they'd all be made up of 4200s.

It's funny, though - the 4200s are in great shape in DC, yet the nearly identical 5900s are "on their last legs", in dire need of replacement. It's interesting to see how two different environments can affect a bus.

Heh, I think he meant that whenever they are looking to replace all of the 4200s, they should consider artics rather than just another batch of 40 foot New Flyers (although replacing all of the 4200s with artics would be overkill).

This might help out with the issues of low capacity on the F4/6...although, I though Landover had a bunch of artics already.

If it came to that, yes. Otherwise, they'd do well on any route which has headway constraints but tons of ridership to boot or that would see a hit in capacity if it went to 100% 40' low-floor operation.

Aside from environment, it's also a testament to how well WMATA rebuilds their buses that keeps the 4200's going. Outside of the 9600's, has there ever been a bus they've rebuilt that has didn't turn out well (and even then, the 9600's got 16 years while the similar PAT 2200's were gone at 12).

But I don't think Jason's suggestion of replacing 1 artic for every standard sized bus in this economic situation is going to get much consideration. I'd love to see more artics in the WMATA fleet, but let's face it, we all know how they are going to be used most likely: to cut service somehow.

I also believe that I once heard that WMATA put a lot of miles on those buses at the start of their careers, so yes, they were rebuilt, but they already had a lot of use by that time.
