What would a Triboro bus signed as Q72 be doing down there? Could that be just outside Queensboro Plaza, with that BMT Standard on what is now the N line? |

[What would a Triboro bus signed as Q72 be doing down there? Could that be just outside Queensboro Plaza, with that BMT Standard on what is now the N line?]Maybe. The bus to the left seems to be signed for "Roosevelt Av," so it's probably in Queens. |

What would a Triboro bus signed as Q72 be doing down there? The B72 was a TA route until 1961. It was part of the Grand Ave/Grand St trolley line that once ran from Delancy St to LaGuardia Airport. The line was split into 2 parts, when the trolley service was eliminated. One part went from Bridge Plaza to Maspeth (B59) and the other went from Roosevelt Ave or Corona Ave(?) to LaGuardia Airport (B72). This part of the route differed from the trolley route which used a private right of way and Jackson Mill Rd between these points. |

If that date on the photo is 1955, the lower level tracks to Stillwell Terminal were already severed after the IND Division took over the Culver Line south of Church Ave. in October 1954. Posted by NorthShore on Sun Mar 18 17:03:02 2012, in response to [OLD PHOTO] Check This Out, posted by Newkirk Images on Mon Dec 27 20:34:41 2010. This photo is Queens Plaza with the BMT Standards headed to Manhattan from Astoria. The B72 was housed in the old Maspeth Car Barn until c.1955 when it was demolishied for the L.I.E. After being displaced an open area of Queens Plaza was used until the remote Brooklyn Division route could be transferred to the Queens Division-Flushing Depot. The Twin Coach buses were part of an order placed by North Shore (160-199) but delivered to NYC BOT after take over. The fleet nos. were North Shore's and never changed (similar to North Shore's other postwar Twins -150-159 & GM 4507's -300-319). The route from Ditmars Blvd. to Corona Av. (connecting with B58). Roosevelt Av. was a short turn to connect with the I.R.T. Flushing Line. |

Believe West 8th Street or thereabouts is correct. Also, the photo is credited to a gentleman, Mr. Cudahy, who wrote numerous subway/elevated books, so I'd have to believe he knew who the photo was taken. In addition, those buses don't have license plates, ad usually buses ready to be scrapped were stored where this photo was taken. |

Believe West 8th Street or thereabouts is correct. That's what I was thinking. The A-B's seem to be leaving West 8th St heading toward Ocean Parkway, if I'm not mistaken. The stucture at Queens Plaza would be more of a sharp curve than the one seen in the photo. Bill Newkirk |
