How long does it take the MTA to update its bus signage?

It's over two months since the service cuts and bus # 5107 is still running around without the updated signage. I wonder how many more of these buses are out there. Just saw it today on the B1 headed toward Kingsborough. Not only is the signage incorrect due to the changes of June 27th, apparently it was never correct since it reads "B1 via 13Av--via 85 St to Kingsboro Coll Manhattn Bch." The driver did not change the sign on the return trip since it still says Shore Road, not 4th Avenue.

The most annoying part of all this is that when the switch to all digital signage was made in 1980 at a great expense ($3,000 per sign as compared to $500 for a roll sign) its touted benefit was the ease of making "instantaneous" changes to signs as a result of route changes. It never took over two months to make changes to the roll signs.

Many buses received updates in advance of the service changes.

Perhaps this bus was a recent transfer from another depot.

While were on the topic of UP, I seen two of their MCIs (2201 and an 43xx) have the new "NYCT Bus" sign to use when deadheading. Perhaps this bus slipped though the cracks when it came to update the signs, keep in mind theres subway cars out there that still show transfers from 2001... nearly 10 years ago!

Often when the buses are flashed, the buses that are off site due to work or various other reasons do not get programed. There is rarely a checklist of what has been done, but just a few guys going through the yard prior to pull out. There is no way to find out program version number until it ends up on a line that has the wrong text.

It's just the seven RTS buses with Hanover Display signs that have that problem (5105-5111; I'm not sure if 1304 has had its sign updated); to me, they should be barred from the B1 and B64 routes until they are changed.

All the 99 RTSs are like that. I've changed my opinion in reguards to the 6xxx Vs vs 99 Novas lol. I like 99 RTSs more than the 6000s again, I came across one to many 99 Orions w/ crappy A/C for my liking lol.

This bus sounded 'worse' than the usual rattling, imo. On the flip side I got 9614 on the B46 and damn did that bus sound great [engine wise] and didn't rattle much.
I love the 9600s!

That excuse would have made sense if there were still roll signs. The thing with the electronics is that all buses in the system supposed to always have the same consistent signage. That was the major reason for getting rid of the roll signs, that it wouldn't matter which depot the bus was in. They could be switched between depots without having to remove and replace the signs,

You have to weigh costs involved. A rollsign may only cost $500 but everytime you have a service change you have to modify each sign in each bus. With an hourly cost of maintenance ~$100/ hour and at least two hours of total service time. With service changing (I assume) three times a year, you have the potential of spending $18,000 (assuming $500 to take out/splice/put back in a sign) on changing signs out on one bus over the course of 12 years. Then you have to consider the amount of time mechanics are taken away from doing other work that needs done.

That said, I agree that destination signs should be updated to the most up to date program at all times.

Okay, but changing the electronic signs isn't maintenance free either. The chips have to be removed individually from each bus and manually reprogrammed. as I understand it. Someone once posted that now there is a way of doing that remotely, but I don't know what technology is involved or what needs to be done to make that possible.

I also remember hearing that when there were roll signs, only six mechanics were needed to keep them all functioning until they just stopped maintaining them. The electronic signs require at least 20 electronic specialists to keep them functioning not included extra work needed when the signs have to change. I really don't think that they cost less even in the long run.

Yikes, that reminds me of when bus Orion V bus #6089 was at Gun Hill. When the Bx30's destination sign was changed to read "NORWOOD 205 ST STA" #6089 still had the sign reading "NORWOOD 206 ST". It was eventually corrected to read the former, but that gave me the impression that the electronic signs weren't updated en masse, they had to be reprogrammed individually.

Flashing only takes 10 or so seconds per bus, it is just a PCMCIA card that is put into a slot on the bus then its done, pull the card back out. If you wish, I can take video of it.

Signs dont break as frequently as you might think, but when they do, there is a very long lead time from destination sign manufactures for whatever reason.

The six mechanics were probably to fix mechanical issues with the sign. You have to consider the being able to flash all the buses in one night as opposed to the time of taking roll signs out slicing them and reinstalling them, it would take weeks.

Ny understanding was that the six mechanics did all the splicing of the roll signs. More may have been required for the installation and removal. As far as fixing the electronic signs, they might not break down that frequently, but there are alwasy twenty or so out of service being repaired. All repairs are done by in-house NYCT employees who also fixed the signs for the private companies when they existed. (They paid NYCT naturally for this service.) I believe the only time signs are sent back to the manufacturer for repair is during the one year warranty period. That's the long lead time you refer to. I believe the turn-around time for repair is usually about 48 hours from the time a malfunction is reported if I remember correctly for ones that are not sent back to the manufacturer.
