Dedicated LGA Buses for the Q33/47?

This afternoon coming home from work on the Q67, I ride 4020, the first of LGA's batch of Orion VII Hybrid NG's. I was very suprised to observe that low floor area of the bus (between the front and rear doors) has been modified for airport service.

In the front of the bus over the right wheel-well a pad was laid over the metal along with bars going up the side so luggage could be placed there and be secure. The fold up/handicapped longitudal 3 seater is the same. However, where the 3 single forward facing seats were now has the first seat modified to a 2 seater, the second position is still a 1 seater and the third position is also a 2 seater. Looks weird!

On the left side of the bus the fold up wheelchair/handicapped longitudal 3 seater the same. However the 5 rows of 2x2 forward facing seats now is 3 rows with the back 2 rows opposite the rear door being removed, obviously moved to the right side to take the place of the 2 removed singles. In place of the back 2 seats is a bi-level luggage rack.

I have a feeling why this bus wasn't on one of the airport routes today is because several more (4021-4039?) need to be done. Then there will be some kind of official celebration with MTA suits and politicians to celebrate this improvement.

I don't see just 4020 being modified. They may even need more than 20.

Intresting. I wonder if buses in ENY/JFK & JAM will get the same treatment? For B15/Q10 & Q3 service, however I've never seen anyone get on the routes with luggage like I do on the M60. Those JFK Airport routes seem to be mostly used by Airport workers rather than travelers.

So that's why the only NGs I saw today on the Q39 were the 4483-4512 set. Why not use the RTS since they have more seats? How busy is the Q33 daily?
---------------------------------------------
Q55- OrionVII Hybrid #6541
Q33- OrionVII Hybrid NG #4483
Q33- OrionVII Hybrid NG #4488
Q55- Nova RTS #9155 (8753 was rejected)

Im not sure. However 4021, 4023, & 4024 with about 20 or so other buses are O/S. I ll hold in my temper with that sorry ass of a depot.

I tried getting to LGA by #7 train and bus many years ago and swore never to try it again. Apart from the bus being impossibly crowded and stopping every few feet for one reason or another, carrying luggage on the accessability challenged and also impossibly crowded #7 was a nightmare. A couple weeks ago a friend of mine from out of town tried getting to Manhattan from LGA the same way and had the same experience. What is needed is a dedicated non-stop bus to an accessible (elevator/escalator equipped) IND station if we can't get a train right to LGA.

The M60 is another route thats an PITA for people with luggage, its always packed to the grim, those hybrids get an nice workout on that M60, carring those heavy loads over the tribourgh bridge. Theres some mean potholes along that route too, I remeber riding an NG on the 60 though the Airport and the bus went over an pothole I heard thing go BOOM! ethier the B/O or an customer (The bus was SRO packed to capitity) was yelling out some four letter words lol. IMO, that has to be most burtal route in all of RBO, wear and tear wise on the equipment.

I've suggested in the past a Q100-esque route to LaGuardia Airport from Court Square, or an express route to Woodside.

As a regular daily rider of LGA (Q39/Q67) buses, the NG's are beat to sh** already. I didn't realise how beat up they are until I rode a few from GA on the Q59 recently.

BTW, for the M60, it's down to at least 3877 in terms of buses with luggage racks (in other words, it may be at 25 buses now).

Sometimes I wonder what LaGuardia's cleaners/car wash operators do during their shifts, especially after seeing so many buses with dirt and trash all over them.

I can't disagree. I ride an early AM bus on it's first trip of the day on the Q39 and many times it is not as clean as it should be.

The whole culture of taking decent care of its' buses just doesn't exist in that facility.

Wow, they (LGA) have an much newer fleet yet more buses OOS vs an dump depot like UP, which was posted not too long ago they only had like 7 buses OOS. This proves that newer isn't always better!

If you think LGA's Next Gens are beaten up - you need to see JFK's.

These buses are beat up to death because they're consistently on the road 365/7. IMO, they are running TOO much and could use a rest at certain times. Certain depots have a "rule" where certain runs can only have Hybrid buses. I think each and every driver should not be given any bus over another. Heck, that's all I saw this morning on various LGA routes.

Thank you. Even though certain buses may be older, they sure run and handle the streets much better than these newer buses. Some of these newer buses look, ride and sound much older than their current age. On top of that, these newer buses have too many more electrical gizmos to them. Whatever happened to a simple, conventional way of doing things?

How bad your or my opinion is of the fleet has all to do with how often you ride them. I admit I don't ride JFK's that often, but when I do ride "theirs" on the Q60 (admittedly Queens Blvd. is not as bumpy as the roads the Q39/67 traverse) their NG's seem to be in better shape than LGA's. Only my opinion. Of course, GA's are better than JFK's too.

My point was proven tonight. I heard that bus 3638 was towed back to LGA for unknown reasons. 3627 stalled out in the middle of an intersection. I rode 4028 on the Q29 and the front shocks were so loose that the bus rode very rough. The Hybrids were the only buses from LGA that I saw on the road tonight.
Listen, I'm not saying that they should sideline each and every single Hybrid bus. Obviously, that can not be done. What should be done is run a variety of buses. RTSs, Orion Vs and Orion VIIs-ie a little of everything. LGA needs to get off the schnide of using just the Hybrid buses. They are not the only buses they have and is the main reason they are so short as they are. JFK FR and SC-I understand because that's what makes up the majority of their fleet. FR-that's all they have. However, some of the Hybrid buses from LGA need repairs as well as some time off of the road. They look and ride much older than their age is.
