Transit kook arraigned on charges he stole not one -- but two buses

The mass-transit madman who yanked a bus from a Hoboken depot yesterday appears to have stolen yet another bus 21 days ago from the same spot and driven it to Washington D.C., police sources said.

Darius McCollum, 45, told officers after his arrest yesterday that he stole another bus nearly three weeks ago – and hasn’t yet been caught, law enforcement sources said.

Authorities in Washington D.C. are checking the fingerprints on the recovered Trailways bus to see if they match McCollum’s, sources said.

"It’s bizzarre. It’s around that time frame," police sources said.

Officials from the MTA – who McCollum has terrorized for 30 years -- confirmed that none of their buses were stolen three weeks ago.

His lawyer, Stephen Jackson, said, "He vehemently denies that. He has not been charged with any other incident and there’s no indication of him taking anything else than what was charged in this case."

Trailways spokeswoman Anne Noonan was unavailable for comment. Her assistant said she was "out of the office for the rest of the day."

McCollum, 45, who has a history of commandeering subways and slipping in to transit facilities with impeccable uniform fakes, is now being held on $100,000 bail after appearing in Queens criminal court this morning.

He went on a joy ride around Queens with a Trailways coach yesterday.

He stood serenely in court as he was arraigned on criminal possession of stolen property and other charges.

McCollum, 45, also faces a grand larceny charge in New Jersey.

Jackson, his lawyer, said McCollum’s family -- his fiancee in Queens and mother in North Carolina -- are struggling to make bail.

Jackson blamed McCollum’s decades-long rash of transit-related crimes on Asperger’s syndrome, a form of autism.

"It’s the nature of the disorder. He can’t help himself," Jackson said. "He’s fixated on buses and trains and mass transit."

McCollum is "remorseful," though he wasn’t aware he was committing a crime, Jackson said.

"It’s an urge, a compulsion," he said. "Unfortunately, he can’t help himself."

McCollum’s next court date is Sept. 15.

His alleged joy ride Tuesday resulted in his 27th arrested in 30 years. He most famously steered an E train several stops to its terminal at the World Trade Center in 1981, when he was 15.

Is it just me or is this article full contradictions and missing holes?

Officials from the MTA – who McCollum has terrorized for 30 years -- confirmed that none of their buses were stolen three weeks ago.

Didn't the article state that he stole the bus from the same spot in Hoboken 21 days ago? Since when did the MTA have a facility in Hoboken?

If he so highly intelligent and sneaky, then why hasn't he taken an airplane for a joy ride.....no worries if and when he is caught, his
"Aspergers Syndrome" will apply....

Hoboken would be Academy Bus or Trailways. The author may be thinking blue-and-white, which can also be Academy.

I'm totally shocked that you're reacting to absolutely nothing, and that you had to bring religion into it.

RIPTA, it's because Newkirk Plaza David has some sort of mental retardation. It seems like he was able to keep it in check for many years. But now it has inexplicably surpassed his ability to contain it.
