(last week news)

Trans-Bridge Lines Executive Vice-President James JeBran reveals no traces of residue on his gloved hand after placing it behind a new green motorcoach.

In a move to improve both the environment and local transportation options, Bethlehem, Pa.-based Trans-Bridge Lines unveiled 16 new low-emissions motorcoaches to its fleet during a press conference held at their Industrial Drive headquarters Tuesday. The coaches, manufactured by Motor Coach Industries (MCI), feature new engine technology that reduces particulate matter.

On hand for the event were U.S. Congressman Charlie Dent (R-Pa); State Senator Pat Browne (R-Lehigh County); Northampton County Executive John Stoffa and representatives from both state Senator Lisa Boscola's (D-Northampton) and state Rep. Douglas Reichley's (R-Berks/Lehigh) offices, among others.

"Traveling by motorcoach reduces congestion on our roads and highways. One coach has the potential to replace up to 55 cars," said Tom JeBran, president, Trans-Bridge Lines. "Our motorcoaches are eco-friendly in a variety of ways, making them more fuel-efficient, in essence, than the latest hybrid gas-electric cars."

Dent spoke about the way in which these new motorcoaches would benefit the
environment and commended Trans-Bridge for using mostly private funding to spur their green initiative.

Trans-Bridge Lines has invested in excess of $7,000,000 in new eco-friendly coaches, replacing older less efficient models.

The coach opeartion's new motorcoaches obtain the best passenger miles per gallons out of all forms of transportation including private automobiles, airlines and passenger rail, according to a company statement.

The coaches are equipped with Detroit Diesel engines and Allison transmissions. Key to the clean-air technology is the Diesel Particulate Filter, or DPF, that replaces a traditional exhaust system, and the use of Ultra Low Sulfur Fuel, to meet rigorous new EPA standards.

Trans-Bridge Lines Executive Vice-President, Jim JeBran, demonstrated this new technology by placing his white-gloved hand under the exhaust pipe of one of the new buses as the engine was revved. The glove showed no traces of residue of any kind.

Other vehicle features include seats made out of recycled material and seat belts ahead of federal mandates. Trans-Bridge Lines was the first motorcoach company in the country to use the newest seating fabric made from recycle material, according to company officials.

Trans-Bridge Lines has also equipped its entire New York City run fleet with free Wi-Fi service, allowing passengers to enjoy connectivity as they travel.

And the part they leave out is, MCI is still using 2009-spec engines that don't meet the new 2010 emissions regs. DPFs and ULSD have been around for years - the 2010-spec engines also use urea (DEF) injection.

MCI has already noted that the D-series is only evaluating a 2010-spec Detroit; they are only committed to 2010-spec Cummins engines for that series. FYIfromMCI July 2010 - START YOUR ENGINES: MCI outlines 2010 engine changes

Just another "Look at us! We're green!" PR stunt that's actually behind the times.

Not true, Adirondack/Pine Hill/New York Trailways began using these materials 2 years ago in the first NEON labeled coach's, Prevost H3-45's (Adirondack numbers 62081-62087). As a matter of fact, Prevost had to recall these seats because of persistant seat failures leading to injuries and the cushions not holding up. They were replaced with regular coach seats.

I agree with you 100%. One time I rode a Van Hool on a cruise/shore excursion from Portland Me. to the Mt. Washington Cog Railroad. I have nothing good to say about that bus. The interior was a collection of hunks of plastic, event the foot rests, and a very strange restroom where signs requested that even men sit on the potty to pee!

A few days later I was on another shore excursion in Halifax and was thrilled to be on a nice MCI.

I rode a DATTCO Van Hell on a Mega Bus extra section from Boston to NYC in 2008... Worst. Ride. Ever. The seats were horribly narrow and cramped. Not made better by the lead foot at the wheel that kept tailgaiting, jamming on the brakes and abruptly changing lanes.

Good buses that have held up well so far in testing in the fleet.

Word from someone I know though says somebody's after the JeBron's to buy out Trans-Bridge. It is said to be the same people who basically re-possessed Golden Touch.

Actually from what I was told, Golden Touch dropped the Veolia affiliation because of a private equity partnership that brought in new buses and work.

The Golden Touch brand will remain, it's just that it will no longer be under their own operation come September. Does that sound familiar?

Well...there's a lot that's not been released publicly....they are extremely savvy business people. There are a lot of different partnerships, finance agreements, pooling agreements, lease agreements and buy-out negotiations.

Coach USA has all but abandoned their charter position in the Northeast...Academy is more focused right now on taking on Peter Pan and Dattco in New England. These local deals are just to provide a more diversified product supplementing revenue to parts of the business they never had a grip on before (short-haul contracts, school-based services and airport contracts with airlines).

Proof in the pudding about Coach USA though is that Jeff Ferreri, the former charter manager in Paramus now works in an office right above mine at Peter Pan.
