The TA usually don't have the groups numbered that close. If they choose to use the 78/7900 series, my guess is that they'd start with 7850.

8000-8474 is also open. (The option is almost certain to be exercised.)

BTW, the MTA has never used 7938-7999 for buses---ever. (Other series that have yet to be run on MTA buses: 1859, 6958-6999, and 7286-7299.)

I hope these buses are LFRs! It would suck if these buses are the old design, the only diffence would be it would have Orange signs and an Cummins engine. :(

Word on the street is that these are suppose to be LFs with the old face.

However, I don't believe it, NFI did away with that face as a standard and stated that you'd have to pay extra for the old face. I don't think we're in a position to pay extra, and paying extra would easily put the DBNA bid cheaper than the New Flyer bid.

But I guess this will be one of those we'll see things...

Interesting. On the subway side, 7960-7999 have never been used (AFAIK), so those numbers have never appeared on a NYC transit vehicle. And it might stay that way, if the R-188s pick up where the R-142As left off, there will be a total of 146 new cars, which would be 7811-7956.

I really do not think they going back to that old design if MTA stupidly put more wasteful dollars in to the bus with an outdated look. The "LFR" buses looks great except the front doors with two piece window look like somewhat RTS front doors is hideous. I rather have 1 long window version of the front door. MTA better choose that route.

New Flyer discontinued the original face in 3rd Quarter 2009. Just like Gillig with its face options, New Flyer would only build buses with the older face at an inflated cost since the were no longer mass producing the original face cap.

Gillig charges an addition $17,000 per bus for the different face and the New Flyer price is not far from that per unit (IIRC around $10,000 per bus) to re-tool the production line to build the older face. The last two properties to receive New Flyers with the original face were SEPTA and CTA in 2009.

135 buses (with the POSSIBLE prospect of an addition 340) is barely enough. Most manufacturers only go crazy like that if the order is 500 units or better. We've only secured 135 definite buses and who's to say if we take some, all or none of the 340 option buses. New Flyer would be taking a serious chance doing such a thing for free, I'm sure you know that cost are definitely involved to re-tool a production line for something that its not producing at the current time.

Knowing New Flyer's shaky financial history, why take that risk without charging the necessary cost to the contract? From a business standpoint, it would be a poor poor decision on their part.

Honestly, Trevor, I agree with you. Besides, with the amount of Orion VII NGs out there, as well as the Nova LFSs, the Designlines, and the newest MCIs, going to the old design would make the new CNG New Flyers look incredibly dated compared to the new fleet.

Besides, what incentive would MTA have to keeping the old design? IF these new New Flyers are replacing the old ones, there's no point in having "fleet commonality".

All this outside of the price to keep the old design. It would just be a waste and provides no benefits at all.

This news (If it is true) that the these buses will have the old design is the biggest buzzkill ever, 98% of the hype of this order was the fact that the LFRs would be coming into this city, if its the old design... meh. Also, what about Seattle's DE60LF order? Even though there is an order for 100 DE62LFA's for their RapidRide BRT projects, there have been more deliveries of 6800-series buses (notably #6832-6864, which are still coming in for acceptance and readiness for service as we speak) and Sound Transit's 9620s, from the same order, not unless they were held at the plant and delivered recently...not sure about those...

However, the model may still be the LF model if that was negotiated in the contract (as the MTA already has that model). It may not be the LFR or Excelsior after all.
