Closing that block will cause massive traffic jams. It was one of the few excape routes. Now all traffic will be funnelled into Downtown Brooklyn with no way to get out when there is traffic congestion.

Sunday afternoon 3.7.2010 I rode a northbound B63 on the new route, as drivers were told to do a day early. Left onto Flatbush was no sweat. Then we caught up to our leader, stuck, unable to turn left onto Atlantic. Each time there was a break in southbound Flatbush Avenue traffic, there was no room on Atlantic, due to a red light at Fourth Avenue. When he finally made his move, he nicely swung wide enough to provide space for us to double-up on his left. Then came the problem of getting to the curb west of Fourth Avenue. A mess. A left arrow for buses (Flatbush to Atlantic) must be timed with a green signal allowing westbound Atlantic Avenue traffic to get across Fourth.
----
Somehow (and I could be wrong), I think the B63 "old" route, crossing Flatbush Avenue twice, was the trolley route, and that, in turn, may have been the route of the Fifth Avenue el.

The el turned directly onto Flatbush and ran over Flatbush to Hudson Avenue.

If it was that bad on Sunday, imagine during the rush hour.

What are the odds that Vanderbilt Avenue ends up becoming more heavily used?

There are concrete islands on Vanderbilt Ave (between Bergen St and GAP). I read in the paper that 6th Ave will become a two way between Atlantic and Flatbush Aves......
