(Photos below on the article) Accident involved with 1997 New Flyer D40LF (#4060) got t-boned by a light rail.

9 hospitalized after Metro train, bus collide downtown

Nine people were hospitalized Monday afternoon after a Metro bus and a light rail train collided near Metro headquarters downtown.

A preliminary investigation showed that the bus, westbound on St. Joseph Parkway, ran a red light and collided with the train, northbound on Main, Metro spokeswoman Carolina Mendoza said.

Mendoza said the bus driver, who joined Metro in 2000, and a passenger on the train were among four people taken to nearby St. Joseph Hospital. Four others were taken to Ben Taub General Hospital and one person was taken to Memorial Hermann. All injuries were reported to be nonlife-threatening. The train operator, who joined Metro a year ago, was treated and released on the scene.

Bus service was substituted for Metrorail northbound from the downtown transit center to the University of Houston-Downtown, Mendoza said. Rail service continued south of the transit center with trains going back and forth on a single track while the other track is out of service, she said.

Trel Robinson, who was sitting near the rear of the train, said he felt the impact of the driver applying the brakes before he heard the sound of the collision about 3:30 p.m.

“I was sitting in my seat, tweeting,” Robinson said. “I heard the crash, and they told us not to leave our seats.”

Passengers who were not injured were permitted to leave after about 20 minutes, Robinson said.

Robinson, a writer and musician who moved to Houston about three years ago, said he has been trying to take public transportation more often rather than drive. Monday's episode won't dampen the effort, he said.

“Things happen,” he said. “I'm from Chicago.”

Hopefully the people recover, but the train definitely won. I would be surprised and completely shocked if that bus ever ran again under its own power.

Even if that bus did run again, you can safely say that this bus is finished and until that particular train is repaired, we're now minus one train because of some careless driver who risked people's lives just to go through a light.

All the while, it looks like everybody WILL recover from this unfortunate accident.

Those pics really should be submitted to FailBlog (crediting the original photographer)...oh wait, we have at least 245 other examples.

While this example is different, since both vehicles were county-owned, has Metro gone after motorists' insurance for damages (except for the one incident that turned out to be the LRT operator's fault)?

So that's where those pics came from.... Meh---thanks to GOLD_12th anyway for posting the pics of this "unfortunate" accident.

"has Metro gone after motorists' insurance for damages (except for the one incident that turned out to be the LRT operator's fault)?"

Good question. Don't quote me on this but I would most likely say so because after all, it was the motorist who caused the accident by doing something illegal anyway.

I heard on the news yesterday that it took nearly FIVE HOURS just to clear up the wreck, BTW.

They didn't come from FailBlog; I am saying they should be submitted there, because that's a fail.

As for this wreck, I wouldn't be surprised if there was also a diesel fuel spill.

Oh---OK.

Judging by the pics, I don't think it was a diesel fuel spill but the vast majority of the time was probably spent putting the train back on the tracks.

Nice pics Gold_12th - thanks!

Tis quite a shame that this happened. Can't run those red lights, especially when it's protecting an LRT crossing.

I'd say this bus could be fixed, but since its an older one it's likely destined to the scrap yard.

Bus driver in Metro train collision suspended

The bus driver suspected of running a red light and colliding with a Metro train Monday has been suspended without pay after being released from the hospital Monday night.

Reginald Rideout, 50, who has been with Metro since 2000, will remain suspended until the completion of an investigation into the crash in downtown Houston, said Metropolitan Transit Authority spokeswoman Carolina Mendoza. It's unclear how long the investigation being conducted by local transportation officials could take, Mendoza said.

Metro officials said on Tuesday that Rideout has been involved in three accidents during his employment, two of which were minor but deemed preventable.

Nine people were injured in the accident that disrupted some Metro service until Monday evening, although none of the injuries were life-threatening.

A preliminary investigation determined the bus, westbound on St. Joseph Parkway, ran a red light and collided with the train northbound on Main, according to Metro, which would release no further information because of the pending investigation.

Speaking of buses and sorry for detracting from this incident:
There was a bus 9400 that was hit by a firetruck last year and the front of the bus was crushed - was it back in service or was that bus scrapped?
