PHOTOS: Germany & France, 1994 - Appendix |

Posted by Jon Bell on Thu Nov 19 19:49:27 2009 This is an appendix to the rail-oriented tour that I've been posting over on SubChat. Berlin is the only German city where I've seen double-decker buses, so I took a couple of pictures of them. Here's one at Bahnhof Zoo:![]() And here's one that made me do a double-take when I saw it go by in front of the Brandenburg Gate: ![]() I thought, "Wow, do they like Mikhail Gorbachev so much here that they named a vodka after him?" Remember, he's the guy who let the Berlin Wall and the Iron Curtain come down while he was in charge of the last years of the Soviet Union. (The differences in spelling are just a matter of German versus English transliteration of Russian.) However, just now I did a Google search and found that Gorbatschow is actually a long-established business in Berlin. The founder fled Russia after the revolution in 1917, settled here, and started a distillery. I wonder if the other Gorbachev has any family connection... |
