They couldn't legally retire them until 2011 unless they returned a portion of the money used to buy them to the FTA.I had several hours in Albany today and got a quick ride on 9912 (they still took my SUNYCard with 6-year-old picture!) from UAlbany to Crossgates. After 18 months away from CDTA, I can safely say that the LFS's need something of an interior overhaul (especially the bulkhead, maybe also replace the seat cushions). I also saw one of Schenectady's Orion VI's (205X) on deadheading on the Thruway for an express run in its original scheme. |

Come to think of it, it was 2053 and it was heading down for an express run.I love the LFS's and they were my favorite buses when I lived up in Albany until the Gilligs came along, the interiors just have never gotten much in the way of TLC. Lots of markings and slashings that remained for months if not years, lots of mismatched seats (the Rosa Parks tribute on 9913 aside), on at least one case on one of the 9950's there were seats whose covering stripped down to the foam rubber. Is that really safe? The fact that CDTA put black numbers on a grey bulkhead up front is another downside. Whoever did that must be colorblind. Luckily CDTA fixed a lot of the oversights that took place with the LFS's with the Gilligs. |

Outside of that they were one of the early adopters of the sealed windows fad (thanks Ray Mellady for that slice of SEPTA), what's so bad about the Gilligs? Their seats are nice, the interior is nice and brigh, the roofs don't leak, there are more seats than the older 40' low floors, what is there to not like? Has the ride quality suffered that much on those excuses for streets? |

The aisles don't seem any more narrow than any of CDTA's other buses (the Orion VI's are kind of an exception since they have so much longitudinal seating) or of any of the other Gilligs I've ridden (BAT, Ride On, BWI Airport).The seats seem a lot more padded than the seats on the earlier buses. The kneeler thing could be CDTA trying to save money by not using them that much so they don't have to maintain them (that and, I think, the kneelers on the LFS's are automatic). As for bumps, that's the mal-maintained streets of Albany, Schenectady, and Troy (all on the hook for streets vs. the county or state) for you! Still are better in a rainstorm where the Orion VI's turn into a sieve. |

I will always like the Orion's I never had a problem with them. As for the bumps I mean with the Gilligs the entire bus moves up and down when you hit a bump as for the other buses you just move in your seat a little. |

Looked real fresh so I'm not sure if it's a recent repaint or what. On a side note, a second RTS will be gracing the streets of Albany in the very near future. This one will be comming from Peter Pan Bus (ex PVTA) 1110. I'm going to finalize the sale tomorrow. |

We signed the deal today, we're buying from Peter Pan (Coach Builders) a 1995 RTS, former PVTA 1113. 35 foot, 102 wide Series 50 Engine. It will be incorporated into the Capital Cruiser Fleet as a Special Event type bus, weddings, proms, bachelor/bachelorette parties and new service to the Saratoga Gaming & Raceway. Right now, the bus is painted all white but we're working on a classy design for it. |
