The Bx12 would operate between 207th-Bway and City Island or Pelham Bay Station. Some Bx12 buses also operated between Sedgewick Ave-Fordham Rd and Pelham Bay. |

You would basically be reinstating the Bx12 as it once was before the creation of the Bx29 in the early 1990's which in itself, is not a bad idea. Having driven the Bx29 I can tell you that there isn't much ridership between City Island and Bay Plaza. One little glitch would be what type of equipment to run on the line. The Bx12 is almost exclusively the domain of articulated buses and that could get a little dicey on City Island especially when making the tight turn around at the end of the island. It wouldn't be impossible for the artic just a little tricky. You would also have to consider the delays caused by the raising of the draw bridge leading out to the island. |

With how popular Bx12 SBS though is, the Bx12 local could go to being a rigid route again though. IMO, for reliability purposes, such should be done, but the Bx12 Local should be truncated on the west end to Grand Concourse. |

Good points, but can't the artics make tighter turns than the Orion V? Also, is the City Island bridge more active than the University Heights bridge? |

Bx12 local would no longer connect to the (4), plus some more Bx12 local stops would have to be eliminated west of Grand Concourse if they did that. |

I can tell you that there isn't much ridership between City Island and Bay Plaza.Perhaps the Bx29 could be combined with some of the short turn Bx12 runs ending at Pelham Bay Station. |

Doubtful it opens much at all, as the planned replacement is a low-level fixed-span bridge. The City Island Bridge is not listed in the openings chart, which likely means it is permanently closed to marine traffic. University Heights (207th Street) lists only two vessel openings. Busiest bridge listed is the Shore Road/Pelham Pkwy bridge in the Bronx, with 1446 openings. http://www.nyc.gov/html/dot/downloads/pdf/bridgerpt08_2.pdf (page 126) The report is from 2008. |

When NYCT staff did on-board interviews in 1989, the overwhelming majority of riders were traveling only between City Island and the subway, AND they were frustrated that their service was always getting bogged down in Fordham Road traffic. THAT's why the Bx29 was split off. |

If that's still the case then I guess that the Bx29 is fine as is. However, how come City Island riders don't complain about New England Thruway traffic the Bx29 encounters between Pelham Bay Park and Co-Op City in that case? |

The artic could make the turn but it would be a little difficult and might require the bus to be backed up. The bridge I was referring to is the Shore Road/Pelham Parkway Bridge which must be crossed before reaching the City Island Bridge. As Mr. Eisenstein pointed out in his post, the Shore Road/Pelham Parkway Bridge does experience a lot of openings and this would impact the on time performance of an extended Bx12. |

The way it was a long time ago (prior to Spring 1969):BX12 between Sedgwick/Fordham Road and City Island BX12A between Sedgwick/Fordham Road and Pelham Bay Park BX12B between Sedgwick/Fordham Road and Orchard Beach (summer only) BX 19 between 207/Broadway and Southern Blvd./Fordham Road. Why was it a split route? Because the BX19 was originally a Third Ave. Railway trolley, 207th Street Crosstown. BX12,12A,12B were always bus routes. The BX19 became a bus in 1948 but the route structure was left alone for 20 years. |

However, how come City Island riders don't complain about New England Thruway traffic the Bx29 encounters between Pelham Bay Park and Co-Op City in that case?Who are they going to complain to? I don't think there is any alternate route for the Bx29 to take to avoid that traffic. |

No local stops would be lost seeing as they're all SBS stops west of the Grand Concourse. They should just leave things as is or combine the Bx14 with the Bx29. You have the current Bx29 route to PBP then run it down Bruncker, loop through Country Club then run CC Rd, Middletown Rd to Westchester av then to Parkchester. |

There are 2 stops that are not SBS stops one is West at the Grand Concourse (E 190 St on the westbound side), the other is at Loring Place. Some local stops were eliminated in Manhattan for SBS |

The bus stop is practically across from the main GC stop . It could be easily taken out. And they took out that Loring Place stop when Sedgwick was made a SBS stop |
